Sherwood Double Pocket Pump Cams

I need to replace the cams in my Sherwood Double Pocket Pump (1971 Chrysler 318, raw water cooled). The pump body part number is 11454. When I do a search I get "obsolete pump body" as a result. Does anyone know what cams I need for my pump? Since they're around $40 each I want to make sure I order the correct ones. Thanks for any help you can provide.

I found a parts list for my 1971 Chrysler LM318 that stated the Sherwood part number for the cam was 10627. Sherwood part number 15883 was listed by Sherwood as the replacement for Sherwood part number 10627, so I ordered two cams, part number 15883. I also ordered two impeller kits (Sherwood part number 09959K) just in case the new impellers I put in are damaged when I remove them to replace the cams.

Glad you found what you were looking for . The cams are often forgotten about and can effect water flow a lot .

I replaced the cams and put in new impellers. When I attach a hose to the inlet side of the pump, put the hose in a bucket of water, and spin the pump by hand I can't get it to pump any water. When I put water in the outlet (top) side of the pump the water runs through the pump and out the inlet side due to gravity. I don't think that's a very good sign. My understanding is the pump should be sealed by the impeller and if I put water in the outlet side it should not be able to make its way through the pump to the inlet side. Is my pump dead? Is it time to buy a new water pump? I believe the modern replacement for this pump is the Sherwood D60. Can anyone confirm that? Thanks for any insight and advice you can offer.

The D60 looks to be the replacement pump . Turning by hand maybe to slow to pump water . As far as the water draining back thru , the impeller in theory should stop it if all is perfect . Any wear would make it imperfect so water may drain back and not be a issue .

What exact problems are you having ?

I ordered a Sherwood D60 water pump. The Sherwood D60 has the same external dimensions as my current pump but with improved internal seals, bearings, etc. I'll install it next weekend.

The Sherwood D60 is made of bronze. I am planning to install the pump unpainted. Is there a reason I should paint it? The bronze shouldn't corrode or rust so I don't think paint is necessary.

The pump impellers are spinning but no suction is being created. My water intake was completely clogged by sticks, leaves, etc. and the pump hasn't worked since. I shut the engine down as soon as I saw the temperature rising but I think the blockage of the water inlet resulted in the pump creating too much vacuum which damaged the bearing seals, etc. The next step would have been to try a major rebuild, but at this point I decided to just buy a new pump and be done with it.

A bad seal can cause it to suck air not water

After doing further research I decided to paint the pump. Bronze does not corrode when exposed to oxygen but it will corrode when exposed to chlorides such as salt water. Because of this I'll paint the bronze to protect it.

The new Sherwood D60 pump is painted and the pulley is installed. I could not get it to pump water spinning it by hand, but when I put water in the top it does not run through it. The water fills up the top outlet and overflows. I think that's a good sign. I'm installing the pump tomorrow and if everything looks good will take it out for a shakedown cruise. Wish me luck!

I installed the new pump today and everything is running great. I'm glad I got that taken care of!
