233hp problem

Post by willietrojan »

I twin 233hp Merc’s, and I'm having a problem with starboard engine, it runs fine till it get to 3000RPM then it starts missing and bogging down . Once I slow it back down under 3000 it runs fine again. I have changed points, wires coil.
Any ideas?

Fuel filter(s) would be my first guess. you may wany to check the pick up in the tank also . Did you use Mercury points or after markit ? I ran in to a case where the points rubbing block was in the wrong place on a set of macthed up points causeing the points to fire when the rotor was not lined up to the cap . ( threw off the timing also) . BTW it was on a F32 also .

Yep, what prowlersfish said, fuel filter and or filter seperator.......out side chance it could be air restriction.....change filters and clean the backfire filter thing on the carb............

After you check out those things, next would be carbs. Around 3000 rpms, if you have 4 barrel carbs, they are probably opening up. If you are not getting fuel, and just more air, the mix is wrong and they could seems to stahl. Also, if the gas is not running through the jets right, and just out an over-flow port, it could do this as well. We don't all run our boats that fast often enough and the carbs get gummed up over time...

Willie,
I have had the same problem with my 233hp aka 351 Ford I engin. I replaced the filters and just about everything that could be done, still had the same problem. I replaced the fuel pump and the problem went away, I can run the engin up to the max rpm without a sputter. The old fuel pump could not deliver the fuel needed at the elevated rpm.
