I have a 1978 f-26 ( i think ) It has two 4cyl GM engines volvo penta SX outdrives the props both rotate the same is there any advantage to changing them to counter rotation. I beleive according to the shop manual I can just change the shift cables. I have had some handling issues in the past nothing too serious I think I have them worked out

You would also have to change the prop to the opposite hand. Volvo stern drives can easily be reversed as you suggest.
The boat will run more efficiently, track true and be easier to handle at low speeds with contra rotating props.

Make sure you can get a counter rotation prop in the corect size double check with Volvo to make sure you can run it in the reverse direction . If it can be and you can get the prop go for it . I am surprised it was set up with the same rotation if it can be ran counter rotation .
