I think I know the answer to this question, but just want to reafirm it. My windlass does not pull chain, only rode. So every time I have to pull anchor and go < I have to coil the chain around the cleat to keep the anchor from floppping around and the bow pulpit horizontal. can I just use the rode, and a larger anchor?

I use my rode only with a Danforth type anchor. The chain adds weight to the anchor shank so it will lay correctly and bite quickly.

I have never had an issue with my anchor setting... (Take your time and she should set) Get rid of the chain and see how it does.

I never Had a proplem with no chain even with 2 other boats tied to me .
However I add Chain if over night on the Hook .

Chain is typically needed if you will anchor in rocky or coral type bottoms where there can be a lot of abrasion. If you are in sandy soil like lake Michigan then the rope may be just fine for an afternoon of swimming etc. Overnight on the hook and you might opt for up to 10 ft. Of chain. It can help the anchor set quicker but I have just rope and never had a problem. Don't need to push more weight around at $2.50 a gallon.

ok,, makes sense , thanks, I really didnt like having the chain dangling around scratching everything up, and it seems to work fine without. It also becomes a pain in the butt to organize it to the chock once the rode is up.

Equipment needs are different for local conditions.

Chain is a must here on the west coast of Florida and it's use makes a huge difference in keeping the anchor set when the boat gets into a pull due to current or wind.

It also reduces the need for scope.

I just used my anchor this weekend,without chain, worked fine in calm water, Ill give it a try for now, but I do carry the chain on board, just in case
