I have a 1976 F26 with a velvet drive transmission. The fluid level is correct, hoses are fine. When I shif into reverse it is immediate. When I shift to forward it is delayed 3-4 seconds before it engages. It doesn't matter if I shift into forward first or if I shift into reverse then back to Neutral then to forward, I get the same delay. Any thoughts?

Worn seals or clutchs or both are the most likely cause . sounds like its time to overhaul the gear

Mine does that from the upper helm and not the lower helm so that tells me the upper is out of adjustment.

Make sure that your cable will allow the lever on the drive to move full stroke when you put it into forward and reverse. Might need a new cable or just and adjustment. If that doesn't work you might need to remove drive and do a good overhaul.

You can adjust the linkage and cable "throw" to engage the forward gear if that's the problem. Check out the travel and play in the cable by pushing the gear lever forward and watching the effect it has on the transmission drive lever. Hope that's all the problem to it!

It seems that when I put it in forward, the arm that the cable attaches to at the transmission hits the transmission at the bottom of the arm on the flat unerside and stops the transmission from going forward anymore. Thoughts

Sounds like its just hitting the stop ( normal) Photo ?

Is there not a ball in the lever that aligns with a detent on the housing to 'lock' it in forward, neutral and reverse position? The lever should also cover the letter F on the housing.

Correct ,there is a detent (ball and spring) to hold it in postion and a "stop" to keep it from going too far .
