the AC_DC converter
??
Do you mean a
1) Battery Charger? or
2) Transformer
I don't think either one was standard on the Trojan, but may have been added later.
What does it say on it or look like?

Probably a battery charger.
Your lights are 12V, and most people use 120VAC lamps with cards plugged in when on shore power. Is it wired directly to a battery - or to the 12V distribution panel? What does the meter say?

Do you have the round black switches (DC) turned off? The cabin lights which work from the batteries should work with or without shore power... only reason I can see them not work is if the DC switches are off.

Does it have a switch and a red light on the front? Sounds like the original equipment battery charger. They were notorious for overcharging and destroying batteries. You are probably better off that it does not work.

Danny is right. Two years ago I got tired of either having dead batteries or smelling cooking batteries and yanked out the old grey metal box battery charger, that looks like it could be a converter but it's not, (because sometimes it would work and sometimes not) and put in its place a nice digital three bank charger/tender and new batteries and I don't have to worry about cooking my batteries anymore.
