Port ignition starts starboard engine-

I have had my 1979 F32 Trajan for 8 years with no problem. Yesterday working on the boat my helper tried starting the starboard engine but instead of hitting the normal start key (someone switched the key for a toggle switch) he hit the RED Emergency start key which sent port power to the starboard starter. Since then the port ignition key turns BOTH engines so if the starboard is running it tries starting it again screwing up my starter.

How to I reset or correct this problem? I remember when I first bought the boat I did try the emergency starter to see if it worked but never had this problem. Since then the wiring in the bilge was redone and a shut off switch added. Have never touched the emergency switch since then until now.

Please either email me at ajp1431@comcast.net or call on cell at 914-393-1377.

Again, if starboard engine running that starter motor grinds when you turn the port ignition key. If the on starboard switch is on and you turn the port ignition key both engines start. If the port is running there is no problem starting the starboard engine.

All this not a problem other than if the port engine stalls as it won't restart without jamming up the starboard starter motor.

I understand that the emergency start swith sends power from port to starboard but there must be a way to reset this.

PLEASE HELP
Andy

Andy, I had this same problem with my F-32. I found, inside the starboard sliding cabinet below and to the right of the helm, on the wall inside the cabinet, a small relay. I disconnected this small relay and the starters functioned properly again.

I don't know who rewired it but keep them away as they screwed it up

your boat needs to be looked at by some one that knows boat wiring
the emergency start button only jumps on battery to the other nothing else , at least thats the way trojan wired it up and any other boat co. I have seen with one .

there is no reset you may have some lose termals but even if you do ,it still needs to be rewired -the right way

some trojans came with togle switchs on the lower helm for ingtion and start should be spring loaded on start postion

Thanks guys for your help. I am heading down to the boat to work on it this afternoon and tomorrow. If anyone can call me on my cell I would appreciate it 914-393-1377.

Yes I agree that the knucklehead "electrical specialist" who installed my battery shut off switch and rewired the boat screwed something up.

I just purchased a 1977 F32 , regarding your remarks of a prevous owner and wiring mistakes, one of the big selling points to me on the boat I just bought is the fact that the original wiring harness looks to be untouched anywhere on the boat. The privious owners did install a few electronics, radar, depth radio, they actually did not add a single extra electrical item to the boat, no lights, no outlets no fans, nothing, why is this good? because with my last boat, a 1976 CHB trawler, the previous owner added numerous "bells and whistles and fancy gadgets" he wired them with speaker wire, home depot solid core wire, lamp cord and all black or all red single wiring, and all of the wrong gauge for the intended load. To top that off, he tapped into a + and - wire at a location that was closest to where he added the electrical device with no regard to the circuit or existing load and to top that off, used electrical tape or wire nuts to secure the splice!
So, when the surveyor said "this boat hasn't been touched" it was a good thing!
