Hey,
Anyone know what the heck the screw knob under the steering hub is for? I figure it's on other boats than just my F25?

I assume that you are talking about the friction lock. If that is what you are talking about, you can lock the wheel down when in cruise or tension it the way you want. I used to put a lot of tension in cruise so it would hold a heading but not so much that I couldn't adjust it easily if I wanted to. Then when I got into the channel I would loosen it up completely for better maneuverability. That way I could leave the helm briefly if I needed to for whatever reason in cruise.
While trolling for Salmon I would lock it down to hold a straight course. Kind of a poor man's auto-pilot.

Or if someone has had the steering hub off and re-mounted it upside down, it could be the cap for your hydraulic fluid reservoir. Suggest you take a close look at it to figure which of the two it is before you start twisting too much!

k9th Is correct , It is not for hydraulic fluid . I saw a photo of the helm in the oil vs varnish posting .
