How involved a job is it to replace these and how long should it take, assuming no surprises, and a mechanic with no experience in this? Also, how much should a shop charge for this job?

i cant tell you what it cost! but i did do mine my self last weekend. with a set of replacement manifolds from Revolution Marine they are all aluminum. my boat came with these but they where leaking bad from the gasket. so i removed them cleaned and resealed the manifold and riser. wile i was there i changed the valve cover gaskets and spark plug. both a lot easier wile removed. only took 5 hours a motor.
hope it helps. it is not hard except for the outboard sides a little tight there.

Aluminum manifolds? Do they last longer? Are they much more expensive? Does anyone recommend them?

Just some advice. Don't put crusader manifolds on. I would recommend putting on mercruiser ceramic coated ones or just some Osco's. I converted to osco's on my crusader 454's and never looked back. You will probably save weight to over those big goofy crusader manifolds.
don't put on aluminum ones.

I have not done Manifolds, but the risers I did on my Crusaders was easy. It took no more than an hour from start to finish per riser. I did one on land prior to launch, and the other a couple of weeks back (actually my father did the second one) in the water.
Manifolds are obviously the bulk of the work, but so long as the bolts are accessable, it is a fairly straight forward job.
