Scenes From An Inlet Tragedy

Some of you have recently seen or heard about this.

A few weeks ago, a captain running the Jupiter, Fl inlet, got tangled up in some rollers. He fell from the bridge, hit the boat and then into the water.
The mate was able to gain control a short time later. The 61 year old captain later died. You can see from the shot sequence, his fall onto the boat and water. Very sad indeed.
Just a reminder how dangerous inlets can be at any given time...even in a large vessel.

Wow - so sorry to hear. That IS a VERY dangerous inlet ...

Tabs up and power on. If you get caught in it you roll ...

It looks like he let off the power when he crossed the roller and the wave caught him (note that the boat stops after, so power was reduced). Notice how the roller overtakes the boat and rolls it in this video sequence I put together ...

We have to cross rollers in all of the inlets without Jetties here, but Jupiter is one of the worst.

A good reminder of why it is best to have a life jacket on at all times while underway. No time to find one and put it on in a situation like that. It may not have helped save his life - but it sure couldn't hurt his chances.

Digging deeper ...
"These were shot coming into Jupiter inlet last Friday afternoon. The boat is the Waterdog, a 48' Garlington used for charter and run by a charter captain, Tom Henry. The swells were caused by the offshore hurricanes and this inlet can be very difficult in most any situation. Unfortunately, Tom was thrown from the bridge of the boat , broke two vertebrae in his neck and was taken off life support yesterday. This was a seasoned captain who bought this boat down in Venezuela 10 years ago. He had run charters out of this inlet for more than 10 years!! The mate regained control of the boat and returned to the dock with the 5 people from the charter unharmed." Sep 8, 2010.
