hey gang, i misunderstood my mechanic when he was talking about using the wd-40 after fogging and winterizing. he gets the stuff in a gallon jug and transfers it to a spray bottle. that way, he can spray a light coating on the engines, belts, hoses, wires etc without the propellant. he does not mix it with anything. just wanted to clear that up for you all in case you want to try that after you've winterized. and for us that have that goofy 'bellows' type thing for the underwater exhaust, he strongly recommends 1. keeping an eye on that for possible signs of dry rot
and 2. coating it with the wd-40 for the winter. he also said it could not hurt to do it once a month during the season.

Thanks for the updated info. Will definately try it next week when I HAVE to winterize for a nov 15th haulout date.

just checked via google. $16.99 per gallon at advance auto parts.
i'm going to pick up some and transfer it to a 'spritz' bottle and use it during the season too. much better than dealing with the propellant cans.

as for winterizing... i hear ya. everytime i go by edwards boat yard more and more are getting hauled out, blocked and shrink wrapped. totally depressing. goes along with the shorter days. yuck!

Yeah, every time I pull into my marina there's more and more on the hard! Lost my parking spot next to the peir cause of a 330S.R. and another OFF Brand!!LOL You are right down the road from me, I'm @ Goose Harbor. Getting ready to go get supplies now so WD is on the list! Good

WD-40 on the engine is a great idea. I've been doing this for years and it keeps the engine, transmission and generator looking good as the day they were installed. When spring time comes, simply wipe the engine down with a clean cloth and it will shine on for another season.

come on over sometime and check out my tri cabin. she will be in the water as parkside has bubblers and i like to putz around on the boat during the winter tending to things. besides, it will be a great opportunity to get to know her since she is 'new' to us.

Not sure I'd WD40 on belts, hoses or wires. Oilss are not good for rubber - and your belts will slip when you fire the boat up in the Spring.

I'm not a fan of WD40 at all.

If you want to protect the engine -use T-9 Boeshield.

I wouldn't recomend WD-40 on the belts or even the hoses but definately use it on the cast iron and steel components. All it does is create a barrier between the surfaces that can rust and the dampness experienced during winter storage.

i asked john about this very thing yesterday afternoon. remember, all we do is lightly spritz down the hoses and components. it's not a saturation bath in the stuff. the primary reason for doing it on the hoses is to prevent them from drying out. he's been doing it for years and with great success. i've emulated it and i too have not been let down by the results. it works, at least for me and for him. i guess the bottom line is this. if you have a better technique, or, something that works for you, then stick to it.

I use BOSHIELD once a year or so.


It is SPECIFICALLY designed for this purpose and will not run or evaporate off a hot engine like WD40 will.

Plus WD40 will leave a wet oily sheen that WILL ATTRACT DUST & DIRT.
