MacGuyver

What was your wildest "MacGuyver" fix out on the water????

I'll start :
Was out in the middle of the bay fishing on a buddies boat that has a single 5.7 Merc. Early in the trip the raw water impeller disintegrated and we quickly over heated. After 15 minutes I remembered he had a raw water wash down pump and a garden hose.
I closed the seacock, took off the hose going to the first cooler and Duct Taped the garden hose to it. Flipped on the switch for the pump, fired up the engine and fished for another 5 hours. Probably stupid not to head back to the marina immediately, but he had 2 rolls of tape so we went for it.

I guess it was once forgetting the propane tank to cook chicken breasts.

Wife improvised with the factory toaster oven which has a broiler setting.

Came out pretty damn good!

but then there was this one time that was pretty serious...

ran out of Jack Daniels.

I looked all over the boat and found Margarita mix & some tequilla.

Saved the day.

You all need to hear about Prowlerfish's big adventure. This is one of the reasons why I voted for him Trojan Boater Of the Year. It left a big impression on me and helped me to think, WHAT IF, while on the water with my family. Would I be this quick to think. Tell'em Paul, and don't be modest.

Had to steer an outboard in from 40 miles out with no steering cable. We duct taped a paddle to it and trolled, then ran it at 25knots in 3' seas.

Have also had to resort to a bra for a sailfish flag ;-)

Trailer spring repaired with 2 motorcycle tool changing bars, ducts tape, tie-wraps and 2 vice grips (NEVER leave home without vice grips). Trailed 20 more miles to the ramp, water skiied all day and railed 30 miles back home in the dark ...

more will come when I think of them - almost every trip has some f*up ...

I will see if I can Find the posting and post a link .

Short version . 20 something knot cruse when left rudder , stuffing box and some fiberglass decides to leave the boat . By the time I got off the fly bridge to the rear hatch over the rudders the water was over my knees was able stuff a life jacket in the hole and hold it with a stick to slow down the leak . rudder post still just hanging thru trying to knock the jacket out . got a friend to take over as a ran the boat with no steering . of course I put out a mayday and a fire/rescue boat showed up. being that I was under way (2-3 knots ? and listing bad ) I would not stop to let them board unless they had a pump ready and running . The wanted to look first before breaking out there pump. I keep on going to a waiting travel lift . and a great bunch of boaters with waiting pumps (there own) I did not even know these guys and they were there waiting . I did hit the dock coming in as the boat was not going too straight .

this was on June 1 2009 about 3 weeks later I was back in the water with many systems not working .( with only 2 days missed due to collapsing from fatigued ) On July first I was up the bay with all systems working . In August I was at the 2009 rendezvous :D

I did 100% of the repairs myself on a very fast learning curve .

My motavation to get it done so fast ? Wes and the trojan Rendevous In St michcals , and If I stop working on it it would have been over . I did not wait on the insurance co. (thats another story) . I paid for all out pockit and when I got a check from the insurance Company it all went into safety gear ,every dime ( 6 person canaster life raft Epirb etc. )

Did I short story ???
