I actually diagnosed it last spring but just starting taking everything apart a couple of weeks ago.
At least it will keep me out of trouble this winter.

How many hours are on it? Looks like oil control rings went bad? Is that 53 or 71 series? Could also be one other part gone bad with those series engines but it still requires tear down/overhaul.

71 series , ever seen a in line 6 53 series or a 92 for that mater ? Most likely broken rings . you can pull the air box and inspect the other clnders /rings . if low hours you can replace the jug and piston , if higher then do them all , and check the heads for cracks . and at least check the injector in #2

On a high output DD 3 most likely causes injector , cracked head , high hours (or run hard) . not uncommon for this to happen at 1500-2000 hours ( less if run hard) . can happen also when over haul is done with cheaper aftermarket parts . one nice thing about a DD you can inspect the other cylinders and rings without tearing apart the engine .

So to us non-diesel guys who may be diesel guys some day and always want to learn as much as we can, what are we seeing in the photo that indicates the number 2 cylinder is bad?

Look at the exhaust ports 5 are dry but #2 is wet with oil .

I am sure he had signs pointing to this like smoking / blow by / oil usage

I knew '92 series were strictly V engines wasn't sure about the '53 series?

The 53 series where made inline up to 4 cly the 6 cly and larger where V engines

It is a 671 TI rated at 450hp which is a bit high for these engines. It has just over 1100 hours on it.
The boat sat unused in a warehouse for about 3 years before I purchased it.
I put a borescope into the cylinder through the intake ports in the sleeve and did not like what it showed so the engine in getting a rebuild. I am doing an inframe in the boat as it would take an act of God to get the engine out of the boat.
It took me about a week of work just to clear out the salon of everything and get the floor up. I then placed a temporary floor over the starboard engine and braced that so at least I have a place to set stuff.
I have made pretty good progress and with what I did today, the engine is about ready to be lifted.
The next step is to weld up a frame to set on the stringers.

Ugh - you're killing me ... lots of work ... but worth it ... too cold to work on boats right now.
