I guess my question would be is there a reason why you don't want to put the correct water pump on?

While the pump may technically work some, I don't think anyone here is going to recommend that you do what you are thinking about doing. You ought to replace the pump with a legitimate equivalent replacement - your life may depend on that pump someday. Saving money now may be very expensive later in more ways than one.

Save a few bucks and then over heat the engine , thats not saving money .
some marine pump will work ether way dur to a neutral impeller angle , automotive pumps are not set up that way , made to pump one way only . if the engine is raw water cooled the impeller will rust away

I have put an automotive left hand circulation pump on a right hand rotation marine engine. (350 cid GM) The pump had a centrifugal impeller with blades angled for left hand rotation. The result was no problem cooling the engine at 1500 rpm and up. Running at lower rpms, like in a marina or just idling, the engine would
heat up.
I would
not recommend doing this. Your better off installing the correct marine pump with the blades angled for right hand rotation or in the straight (neutral) position.
Hope this helps

go to sierra and order the correct on, we're talking 100 bucks, but if you have port supply at west marine, much less...
