OIL I N WATER

went to change the oil today. bad news, Pt. side came out milky. Where do I start to look for the water leak?
1995Crusader 454XL full fresh water cooled 525hrs. Salt water last eight years, before that up in the Great Lakes. As far as I can tell, orginal manifolds, risers, U-cooler.

Did you say original manifolds???

I think they are orginal. Fresh water, then full closed system. So if a manifold goes bad with coolant running through it, would my coolant level be low?

Maybe oil cooler? Pressure test is easy.

coolant should be low if manifolds , possible oil cooler or riser . engine missing at all ? was the engine over full on oil be before change / a oil analysis can tell if its coolant or water in the oil

Oil was at the full mark. I think I caught this issue just as it happened. Will remove the U-cooler and pressure test. I did remove the inboard riser. Yeah it looked rusted, but I don't look at enough of them to know if it was bad or not.

good place to start

From my experience with bad oil coolers, the oil leaks out into the water, not water leaking into the engine oil.
The engine oil normally is at a much higher pressure thus leaking into the water.

very true but I have seen it happen

Saw it happen on a PCM 454 last year . Also saw a V drive implode on a Carver (no offense Tony) from bad trans cooler in '09

ya ya ya it's always has to be a Carver
Are you sure your manifolds are fw cooler and not raw water ? Where the raw water enter to cool the exhaust ?

the manifolds are FRESH water cooled.(coolant). the risers are raw water cooled

well one thing for sure if the risers are original they owe you nothing, and need to be replaced from age. Better safe than sorry. Then do and oil change and run her at temp for a while checking for water getting back in.

Yes - and he said "Oil in Water", not "Water In Oil" - so that may be what he meant.

water in oil. If it was oil in water, I think I should see a slick at the exhaust. No slick.
