Before anyone goes haywire,,
lol Has anyone used an electric raw pump,
obvious disadvantages, like making certain it only goes on while the engine is running, etc,, but I really dont like these raw water pumps,, seems there destined to fail,
any thoughts,
?

I don't know OK anyone making a raw water pump suited for a marine main engine , It would have to be a powerful pump ,that would take a lot of power to run . Your raw water pump moves a lot of water . A electric pump that big would demand a larger alternator . I believe it would be more trouble then its worth , Marine raw water pumps hold up pretty well just change the impeller once in a while in most cases .

a electric pump has a constant flow .Your raw water pump flow increases with speed as the engine needs more cooling water the fast it runs .

Some small marine diesels generators use a electric water pump . They do OK , the difference ? Its a smaller engine that always runs at the same speed and it has 110 volt out put to run the pump . They use the same pump that is used on a marine A/C unit .

Many,Many years ago my first boat was a Kayot deck boat w/ OMC I/O chevy 350 (260hp) I knew less than zero about outdrives.
Naturaly when I bought the boat it fired right up in the guys driveway while hooked up to a garden hose so I snatched her right up.
My first proud trip out on the Potomac river she overheated teribly, we almost drifted into Dam #4
When I got home I called the closest boat mechanic and he told me about the impeller in the outdrive and quoted me what seemed like a million dollars to fix it.
I decided to hook up a big 12v pump since I didn't know how to fix an outdrive.
Got out on the river and it worked fine....... until I got up on plane for a few minutes then over heated until I came back to idle.
Needless to say, I spent the next three weeks learning how to fix an OMC outdrive. Just one mans story about pride.
p.s. forgot to mention my bitch ex-wife telling me "I told you so" for monthe afterwards

I think the key word is maitenanace, personally, I change the impeller every 2 years, pretty cheap insurance, I think, cause if your boat overheats, you don't just pull over. Plus, up here in the great whute north they sometimes cicrulate anti freeze for winterizing, I had a buddy store his implller in a jar of antifreeze one winter, well come Spring that sucker was about twice the size! So, I pose the question, how often does averyone change thier impellers?

I have 3 big electric water pumps on the yacht I run. for AC cooling, AC circ, and one for fire. Two of them discharge a solid 3" stream of water so I think you could keep a small V8 cool with one. The problem is power and cost. Mine are AC but unless you have a generator you will need DC motors and a lot of battey power. I am guessing about 10 amps to run one of these pumps. My pumps cost around 1,800 dollars so even if you get a smaller one and spend 1,000 that is still the cost of 2 engine mounted pumps. There's one more thing, these electric pumps still have almost the same pump housing and impeller so any problems you have on a engine mounted pump you will have on the electric one. I have to change the seals, impeller, bearings, and sometimes the whole pump on these electric pumps just like I do on the engine mounted ones.

but it would make no sense,
seems the rubber impellers are fine the way they are , considering the cost

Gotta agree with everyone here; someone sat down and designed your cooling system with the engine demand in mind don't think I'd change it.

Ex equals more boat money, with the right judge . Or in my case I gave up my bike when we had babies, when the last got out high-school we stopped at the HD dealer and before we got out of the car she said wouldn't rather have a big boat

My Ex told me that she was going to make it her goal to get the F-25 in court. She hated that boat and it was only to piss me off. I said no way in hell, but my boss recommended that I give to her and let her deal with owning a boat that she hates, she will end up dumping it cheap and end up with a lot less money. After I said no problem the boat is yours she changed her tune. Long story short, I kept the 25, bought a 32, and parked both of them side by side at a marina overlooking her office window for a year.
