In the photo below please notice the panels that are marked NO and are for the most part exposed plywood.

Well anyway I have to replace the panel due to the fact that the top of the cutout for the storage area was broken on both sides of the boat.

Here is my question:
I am thinking of leaving the panel solid and gaining access by hinging the top to allow for better access to the entire area and also making the panel stronger.

Any thoughts?

Your idea does allow for total access, I just hate lifting matresses to get to something, but it may work for you. Here is an idea you may be able to incorporate; the doors are being utilized here for temporary lid storage for the compartment on the floor but if you do away with the doors, just put something else in place to hold the lid. In this case, the lid is left off at times to allow an infant acccess to toys.
