So this is probably a stupid question...

I tried to remove my fuel filters last year with no luck.

My old boat had 3116 CATS and the filters just spun off with a strap wrench.

I tried that, and they did not budge.

Is it so simple that I loosen the bolt on top in the center?

Also the current filters have that drain spicket on the bottom and the new filters don't.

Are these just really old filters and Detroit upgraded the design?

I also posted this question on boat diesel, but I like talkin to the Trojans boys!!

YES !!!

This is a canaster filter the spin on ones will not work . you need the right ones

You know the awnser by now its yes .

I beleve you have to change the complete unit to use the spin on filters

So before I go and take the current filters off, I need to make sure I have the correct filters to replace.

When I bought them at Detroit, they didnt give me an option and said this would be the only filter for that model detroit and serial number.

I don't care about being spin off or not, I just dont want to take them off if I dont have the correct filter.

When I put the new filter next to the current, they look pretty much like the exact same dimensions.

So I definitely bought the spin on type. this is a response I got from Boat diesel

Canister filters are going to be made from fluted paper and are the filter media only for a filter. They will come with sealing o-rings to mount them. They are normally held on with a through-bolt. This is the type of filters used in most equipment until the late 60´s. Dirty mess to change out.
Spin-on´s are a canister with the filter media inside. Used on every thing today from lawn mowers to jet engines. They have a female pipe fitting on top for attaching and some have internal by-pass and drain-back valves.

He also said about upgrading...

You can buy primary and secondary filter heads from most DD dealers for less than $50. ea and just go to the new style spin-on filters. These adapters will bolt to they same area where the old filter cans are.
