I have not had any experience with the new tanks...I do know that the old style will allow the smell of fuel into your boat.
I am replacing tanks myself and have direct manufacturer access to the tank you are looking to use and I have decided based on price and the risk of odors to go back with welded aluminum tanks.

Aluminum. Low permeation equals gas fumes. It's a no go to me.

"Low permeation equals gas fumes. It's a no go to me. "
Are for or against?
Please expand on this statement.
Thanks,

From what I understand the newer technology is way better than the old fiberglass or plastic tanks you used to get. They are safe with ethanol... correction, safe up to 20% ethanol.
The polyethylene and the way it's constructed results in very low permeation, yes there will be some over time but not like in the old days. As long as you have a well vented tank and bilge you should not smell anything.
As far as cost you are looking at 1/3rd the price of new aluminum tanks.
BUT, this is what I have heard, I would like to get some input from people who have actually used them.
Thanks again for everyones help.

"very low permeation" means there is still some and in a enclosed area You may get a fuel smell . I have yet to see a boat with "plastic" tank that did not have a fuel smell to some degree .
The EPA has now put regs on small fuel tanks to limit vapors escaping ( causing double the price too) this should say something about the use of plastic .
you can find some good prices on aluminum tank if you shop around .

I feel that if a tank leaches gas fumes it has NO place on my boat. And Paul said it well. Yes metal tanks cost more. But what's your safety worth ? Cut cost other places and buy metal tanks. You'll feel better later.

I am also replaceing fuel tanks in my F-30. If you go with these PE tanks, here is the question you will need to ask yourself every time you board: Is that smell from the PE tank ? Or do I have a real fuel leak ?
I am going with Aluminum.

What Mike said. I hate it when I shut down hot engines and get that hot engine smell in the boat, the ragbaggers hate hereing my blowers run for an hr after I pull in, tryin to figure out where the smell is coming from would drive me nuts.

I put that exact tank in my F-26 last fall as replacement for the steel tank that was full of sediment. Went in easy and works good. I haven't smelled any odors.

All those opposed, don't mean to be rude but do you have experience with the newer plastic tanks... or are you salty dogs remembering the old days when even I admit they where not the way to go.
Technology has changed, the process with regards to composites and construction has come a long way. Many yacht builders are using polyethylene tanks in there new designs.
They are certified to meet all the new standards by the EPA which took affect at the start of this year. They meet all USCG, ABYC and ISO standards. Are you saying they are steering us wrong?
I don't know the answer either, that's why I am asking all of you.
How many of you have changed your tanks because there leaking... I can find many posts on that subject!

What was put in a year or 2 ago smells of gas today . I am around and in a lot of boats .
Will the the new ones do better ? only time will tell . to early to tell IMO
If you feel they will be better go for it . I will wait 5 years and see
I wonder how E10 will efect them over time ? or E15 ?
I know this is not what you want to hear But ...
