excessive alternator voltage

Ok.

I am getting 17v randomly from the starboard alt. She will start at 14.5, then climb to 16-17v. Sometimes she will drop down again, and sometimes not. I went ahead and picked up a new regulator, but I am concerned that it may be a stator grounding issue.

This is the original alt. and has neverbeen rebuilt.

What say ya'll?

Chrysler regulators were famous for going bad and causing a full field condition and overcharging. Change the regulator and retest.

It was the regulator. I Ohm'd out the old one, and was getting resistance. Slapped the new one in, with a healthy dab of dielectric grease on the connections, and fired her up. Perfect VDC at all RPMs.

Life is good.
