starter ring continues

Post by g36 »

as you may have been following my saga. the flywheel where the ring gear is worn according to the dude at the machine shop. that was the reason for the roll pins. hes going to tack weld in addition to try holding it there. but suggest finding another flywheel which i have been trying to do with NO success. has anybody got any leads on one?. would appreciate any leads. i have searched online and everybody that lists one when you call they dont have one so thats not working to well so far. thanks for any assistance

You can try:

http://www.marysvillemarine.com - 810-364-7653

Not sure if you'll be able to purchase from Marysville Marine without going through a service dealer...good luck.

It has been my experience that the ring gear can be purchased temperately and installed on existing flywheel. there is nothing else to wear out like a clutch flywheel.

Question do they actually have a heavy flywheel or is it just a flex plate as used in auto transmissions?

I will no shortly as I am about to take the trannies off my old engines.

Larry you can buy the ring gear separately but the fly wheel is worn/damaged from the ring gear coming loose .

and yes it is a heavy flywheel not a flex plate.

thanks all for the responses.
big d i had seen those on ebay but the numbers (at least) on the cheaper ones didnt match what i had. anyway the good news is bob here at beacon hooked me up and am now awaiting ups. yesterday at the local clutch place i did have my original ring flipped and tack welded and the roll pins removed his decicion . as i was told it could last 10yrs or could let go the first time i try it. (now theres someone convinced of their work). with that in mind i figured i will wait and get the one from bob save this one if i ever had to use it for whatever reason in the future.

Due to dual engine rebuild, I now have two extra 318 flywheels with good ring gear and shock plates.

The flywheel looks just like a regular flywheel used for standard transimission 318s in cars. In fact the ones in my old engines are still shiney and have the telltale swirl marks from machining to be used with a traditional clutch.
