Sytek steering

Post by foofer b »

My hydraulic steering leaks badly from around where the ram comes out of the cylinder. I removed it yesterday and It looks like it is old enuff to be original equuipment. What was installed in the F26 from the factory? And should I try to repair it or just get a new one?

syten steering was the original on my 78 f32 i suspect it will be the original on yours f26. 1984 the syten steering was obsolete. parts are not available from the manufacturer. you might be able to take it apart and try a fix yourself. i have had to replace my lower helm pump because of a leak but so far the cylinder is ok. you might trying calling bob at beacon and obtaining a used one but of course its old also. the replacement will be a seastar cylinder. the easiest way to verify replacement will be to call them 604-270-6899. if you do get some answer or find a repair can you please post so the others of us that have syten steering can also have some info. if you need any info about the syten to seastar helm pump i can help you there. below if alink to some deminsional drawings of seaster cylinders

These things must have been made well, otherwise I would have expected more responses on the forum here.

My part number is BA 125-7-BJ.

I made a few calls today and was surprised by the answers I got. Fluid technologies, here in Jacksonville, Fl, said that repair/replacement parts had not been available for 15-20 years, I was dubious. The local boat supply house, Boathouse Discount Marine, referred me to teleflex. Teleflex sent me to their tech dept's V-M. Seems they never answer the phone and even say so in their outgoing mssg. West Marine sent me to Lamb's Yacht Center, a local yacht supply house/yard who instantly took my part number and gave me a price for a new one $486 !!! (OUCH) or $36.40 for a refurb kit with seals, gaskets and gaskets. I paid right over the phone and it will be shipped in a few days to my house, how nice. I guess they are my new go-to guys. The repair kit is part number HS (OR 5) 5154

My part number searched on the Teleflex site brought up this page--- http://ww2.seastarsteering.com/SEARCH/search.htm. Not the name on my cylinder, but looks identical.
