I should know better than to stick my head in the engine compartment, but i did. You see the genny won't start, so I put a little 'dry' gas down the carb, started, and ran until the 'dry' gas(fleet?) went out . any way I went to try it again,(I am back in the back using the starter switch on the genny) and that's when it went boom!!! Scared the crap out of me!! this is what I saw

I think this is the muffler for the genny, as it has the output and then it exits over the side of the boat!!
Any thoughts, I think I found a replacement, and I think I can just swap things out. Probably won't put 'dry' gas in the carb again. (I think my problem is the choke adjustment)
I still don't know where the top of that thing is!! at least it is not in my eye!!!

That was a water lift muffler .
When you winterize your boat next year use the non toxic antifreeze ( like you use for your water system ), that green stuff in you muffler is poison and illegal to pump over board .

The low tox environmentally safe anti freeze. Tough to find sometimes and not cheap but it says a dog can drink it
But r you telling me the anti freeze caused the blow up

No not saying that , The non toxic stuff is cheap, use for RV . boat drinking water systems easy to find many auto parts stores and any RV place . Last time I got some pink stuff it was about 3 bucks a gallon

The muffler most likely blew from fumes from the dry gas .

That did not happen because of the antifreeze. Are you getting fuel to the carb? How much fuel is in the gas tank that feeds the genny? The genny's pick-up tube does not go all the way to the bottom of the tank as do the engines (safety, fuel for return trip). Usually a quarter tank or less will not feed the genny. Is this an Onan MCCK?

I've seen many mufflers explode from backfires...accumulated fumes in exhaust, flooded condition. Sometimes they go boom when after you've cranked the engine, released and then engaged the starter again. Good thing you weren't hurt.

me too!!! but this describes the situation that happened. I had it running, it stalled out, and then I started to re crank, and then boom. any suggestions?

not sure what you mean, when I winterizied, I took the intake house into an antifreexe bucket, and let it run to it went out the exhaust (just like the water does) so it makes sense that there might still be some antifreese in the muffler (as the muffler is between the genny and the water exit). this is the first time I've tried to run it so , there would still be anti freeze in the lines, or am I missing something??

Since you didn't name the make and model but if it's a Kohler, replace the spark plugs.

was thinking your generator had a closed sooling system using anti freeze, and that the antifreeze in your lift muffler maybe had come from the engine, however, it sounds as this is not the case.
