Trojan Boat Forum

I know this site is all about Trojans and generally power boats, but I thought you might find this interesting. Every year on Lake Michigan and Lake Huron they have two large sailboat races and have had them for many years. On the Lake Michigan side they race from Chicago to Mackinac Island. A week later on Lake Huron a different group races from Port Huron to Mackinac Island. These races attract hundreds of sailboats from all over the world.

Last Saturday they left Chicago and in the early morning hours Monday a ferocious storm blew up on Lake Michigan and in just a few minutes many of the boats were fighting 70-80 MPH winds and what were reported as 4-6 foot seas. Over 40 of the 355 boats quit the race to seek shelter. One boat capsized and the captain and his girl friend drowned while the other six crew members were rescued by another competitor boat.

This is a reminder of how quickly weather can go from good to really, really, bad and the consequences. These sail boaters were seasoned and well-experienced mariners and yet they were no match for what mother nature threw at them that morning in the dark.

while not weather related, boston had a tragic boating accident too this past weekend. a cigarette boat broke apart and flipped over killing one and injured one. just goes to show, always be situationally aware.

I'll add to the sad sight list. Boats burn at marina in DC. Thankfully, no one was hurt.

We have our share of two accidents here i Norway also. Early last week 5 people lost their lifes within 14 hours. Both accidents happend at the same place, and offcourse in the middle of the night. All the implicipants was lightly drunk. Still there are three more people missing from the last accident, and they are assumed to be dead.

Please don´t drink alcohol when You are boating. It can be a bigger loss than gain!
