Went for fuel.....ouch!..... quick spin @ 3000 rpm....Close to 20 knts....

So it sound like Port engine has a bad lifter/pushrod/rocker arm....

Any mechanics out there know if I can change a lifter w/out removing intake manifold and/or head?

you have a 318 ? If so head stays on , and you can get the lifter out with the intake on . BUT if doing a full set I would pull the intake as its a lot easier , if just doing the noisy one I would leave it on but it is a pain to get the lifter in place .

check your push rods first .

I am sure it will come up , there is nothing wrong with just replacing the bad one only.

Thanks, I'll give it a shot...1) new push rod 2) pull old lifter with magnet? 3) replace new lifter "very carefully" with kleps tool of some sort? should be less than about 25 bucks in parts to try and get through the season...full on rebuilt heads as necessary over the winter.

I used to see from KD tools a lifter remover that was essentially a flexible spring (similiar to a grabber tool) that could be inserted through the gap in the head and it would expand out and grip in the keeper groove top of the lifter, then one could remove the lifter and insert another.

Note the lifters do not always come out easily as varnish builds up on the bottom and it may take several tugs to get it out.

Once the lifter is out I would dissamble and mic it for wear and check the push rod for straightness and wear, but as you have it out just as well put in new parts

Beware there is an old wives tale that new lifters ought to go on a new cam shaft. Don't know if true or not or the results of putting new on old.

Did you check around with a something for a sound scope to confirm where the noise was coming from? More than once I've been around a 318 that sounded like it had a lifter problem. It ended up being the fuel pump push rod and arm making the clatter. Just a thought and a lot less work.

Having just built two 318s one reverse ane one normal rotation, I did not see any push rod to work the fuel pump. the fuel pump arms were actuated by an ecentric mounted at front of camshaft not push rod.

I have seem some chevrolet engines that use a push rod, but my 318's did not.

That said the noise could possibly could be coming from the fuel pump. A stethscope type listening device would be helpful in determining where the noise was at.

Noisey lifter can be determined by pulling th valve cover and at idle putting pressure down on each lifter and see which one got quieter. It is messy as oil may go everwhere but works.

Larry, just wondering if used the extraction tool from KD? How did it work ? I also have loud lifters on right bank of starboard engine and would like to take them out without removing the intake, also had fuel pump that was tapping and sounded just like a lifter.

Expands out and grips in the grove where the spring keeper holds the lifter together.

Both will work as long as the head has a gap large enough where the pushrod goes through it I checked the 318 in my shop the head holes will not accomodate the lifter, so it is off with the intake. The tool is still a big help.

Even if you have to pull the intake it can be very difficult to get used lifters out of their hole as varnish builds on the part of the lifter that never raises high enough to scrape gunk off in its lifter hole.

Either way the tool is helpful, run both on google and you will see them.
