We just picked up a 1973 F25 and it has a siezed up 318 in it. Was considering a little more horsepower. The boat will probably be well loaded most of the time and I would like decent performance without heavy fuel expenses. I have heard the Chrysler 360 is about the same size and should fit in easily. Any recommendations and performance info would be greatly appreciated. It is a beauty and we can't wait to put her in the water

Make sure that its the marinized version first off. Secondly I think the blocks are the same so bolting up the accessories shouldn't be a problem. Others that are more knowledgeable on Chryslers should be able to answer your questions with more detail.

The 360 is based on the same block so size is the same and all the bolt ons are same , I believe the fly wheel is different ( balanced ) so make sure you use a 360 flywheel and balancer.

The 318 is in my opinion is one of the best marine engines made , nothing wrong with sticking with it .


before using any parts off the 318 find out why the engine seized

the seller claims this is a 318 but what does it say 225?

Because 318 is the size Cu ins and 225 is the HP for that engine.

Is that mould I see in the head?

I dont know if it is mold or mildew, the boat arrives on Saturday. Regardless, it will be gutted and replaced. I think I will keep the 318, is that likely the original motor?

I would expect it to be original.... my two originals still run very well in my F32.
Many consider the 318 to be almost bullet proof.

I cant wait to get my hands on this boat! I have had a few smaller boats but this my biggest one. I'm not very handy but I expect to learn quickly. The engine is seized so that will be my first project. Rebuild, repower or replace.

I owned an F25 re-powered with a 360. It added 25 hp. I can't remember the numbers but it didn't uses too much more fuel as compared to the original 318.

I have a F26 with a 318 but mines a V-drive. The 318 is a great little motor that's easy to work on. I sometimes wish I had a little more power but usually simplicity is a better option for me seeing how I do most of the motor maintenance myself. I think you may have a hard time finding a complete 360. There are a lot of longblocks out there but the accessories like the flywheel of the 360s are getting harder to find. The 318 parts are still readily available. One thing to note, I had a hard time finding a mechanic to install a Chrysler in my boat when I replaced the engine. Everyone wanted to drop in a GM motor because that's what they usually put in and you can order them complete. The Chrysler had to pretty much be built from a long block and parts off my old engine were used to complete the build. Fyi, My boat doesnt have the clearance for a GM vortec motor, they are too tall but yours might.
