The marina wanted $6000 to but a rebuilt engine in so I told them no thank you - I can get the engine done for $1200 and ask Beacon Bob to reinstall.

So I started taking the engine components off and I have an issue- the things attach to the side of the engines I thought were heat exchangers they go to muffler and I guess the water runs through them to the exhaust -

1. What are they called and
2. Is it horrible there is substantial rust IN them?

Thanks guys -

i believe they are your 'wet exhaust manifolds' and bcuz water runs through them, rust is inevitable. as long as they are not rusted all the way through u should be ok.

Here is a picture of my 6 year old elbows. They were due for replacement. Typically if your exhaust manifolds and elbows/ risers are raw/salt water cooled, plan on getting about 5 years out if them. My exhaust manifolds are cooled by the closed cooling system and the raw water dumps out the elbows. In the picture the center hole is where the exhaust comes out and the rusted outer opening is where the raw water exits. http://i853.photobucket.com/albums/ab96 ... 9-2146.jpg
