Ok... We are in the process of negotiating a deal on a 1985 10 Meter. We had a survey done on the boat last week and the surveyor found some issues. Now I know that a boat that is 26 years old is going to have issues but when do you walk away?
*He found a stringer forward of the engine room bulkhead to be bad. The stringer is the forward port stringer under salon sole. He also recommends that core samples taken from surrounding areas that also contained moisture.
*moisture recorded in interior liner aft outboard sides of fuel tank both port and starboard.
*lower aft engine room bulkhead starting to decay
*hull bottom has excess bottom paint present with a few blisters observed with DEK present.
*four gel voids on port hull bottom.
*moisture recorded in port hull side core aft of amid ship approx. 3 foot high by 6 foot in length.
*port forward cleat and 1st two stanchion bases recorded high moisture in toe rail / deck
*starboard 3-7 stanchion bases recorded high moisture with delam present at navigation light and by waste deck fill plate.
*radar arch backing plates recorded high moisture with delam observed on port side. both arch bases weeping dark liquid.

This boat is a trade-in at the marina. After talking to the broker he understands that they are going to need to fix the problems with the boat.. I love the layout of these boats.. I'm going to use this boat on Lake Michigan as a charter boat. I know its going to be a gas guzzler but I'm ok with that. It is a trade off for a good ride. Anyway I'm looking for some advise on these issues.

Here is a link to the boat. http://www.yachtworld.com/boats/1985/Tr ... ted-States

Thanks, Capt.Troy

The stringer rot would be a concern

"*moisture recorded in port hull side core aft of amid ship approx. 3 foot high by 6 foot in length. " I did not know the sides where cored . But not a expert on the Meter boats

RWS are the sides cored ? " moisture recorded" whats recored mean ? high moisture ? low ? just recored ? moisture meters can be very misleading and in the wrong hands a joke . Many good sufferers won't use them and some will .

The moisture in the hull side wasn't high just present. He said it isn't a problem now but could become one down the road. My biggest concern is the stringer and the moisture- delam on the deck. My question is this normal for these types of boat to have high moisture readings on the deck? He also percussion tested the area and only found delamanated on the area he had noted.

"moisture- delam on the deck" this is not un common , and can be a Minor to major fix depending on how bad and exactly where . I know many boats running around with rotten coring on the decks ,and not having any issues . this can happen on any brand boat A gain the Stringer is the big issue for me .

Its imposable for me to to say how bad any of the problems are with out looking at the boat could all be major $$$$ or could be Minor caught in time for a minor fix . Whats your Surveyors opinion ?

And is the price right with the proplems ?

Yeah the stringer is a big issue for me also. They told me they will repair the stringer. As for the deck moisture the surveyor told me to reseal the deck Hardware and have the delamanated areas fixed.
The price of the boat is @ 29700.00 now.

Hull is solid glass, 11 meters are cored hulls. Decks are cored, but resealing hardware would eleminate any future problems. I also would be careful with stringers rotted. It does look clean below deck as seen in the transmission picture. How many hours are on engines?

stringer rot???

There is 1100 hours on the motors.
The stringer I'm talking about is forward of the engine room bulkhead under the cabin floor. You access the stringers from the bilge hatch where the water tank is. Are these important or do they just support the cabin floor? My surveyor and the broker have different opinions. The broker is telling me that the way the boat is made these stringers just support the floor. I will believe the surveyor before the broker any day.

==========================================

Correcion here: apparently the mid cabins built without the hull liner have conventional stringers.

All of the first generation 10 meters including express cruiser, sedan, aft cabin & convertible all have non wood stringers.

The rear engine room bulkhead IS wood and should be throughly checked.

If you do get it make sure you have the survery check the stringer repair .

Well we have resolved the stringer issue. The forward bilge area has wood at the landing area at the base of the steps in between the water tank and the engine room bulkhead. This is an easy fix. The surveyor noted high moisture reading and delam present in the forward deck. The broker is basically telling me that he disagrees with the surveyor and will not address the issue. So as it stands now we are once again looking for our 10 Meter..

I don't blame the broker if the moisture meter is the only sigh of de-laminating . If the deck is de-laminating you should be able to detect it ,in other ways .Did you try a lower offer ? most boats of that age would some issues that are not real issues .

Good luck on your search
