It seems I heard somewhere that you should not use a scoop or strainer type entrance to feed cooling water to a Genny? Doesn't realy make sense to me. My Genny will have freshwater cooling.

Thoughts, facts, Ideas?

The reason that you want to avoid the scoop type intake is that they are usually mounted facing forward and when under way will force water into your genny's cooling system. If this water seeps thru the pump and gets into the exhaust riser with the genny not running, it can back up into the exhaust port and flood the engine.

I have a scoop type straining intake on my generator however it faces rearward to avoid this problem.

Interesting. My F32 has a clam shell strainer on the Genny intake (raw water cooled) - from the factory. Never had an issue with it (at least yet). Typically cruise around 16-18 knots.

You can add a 'round' style strainer if you are concerned with the possible pressures (like this http://www.go2marine.com/product.do?no=86193F or this http://www.toplicht.de/en/shop/technik- ... fuehrungen) but still want the protection of an external strainer.

One thing that would be key regardless of what you use as a thru-hull is placement - you want in an area of good, reasonably undisturbed water flow, that will always be submerged. If it is in turbulent water or too far forward you could have some flow/aeration issues. Mine is about 9" away from the keel, forward of the aft end of the keel, and well forward of props and rudders. Pretty much in line (fore and aft) with the engine coolant intakes.
