My F-28 has the Onan 6.5 MCCK. It runs great when it starts. The Thermo Magnetic choke is shot. Is there any way to hook up and use an electric choke from a standard car carb? Or must I hook up a hand choke. The Onan parts for this choke are riduculuosly priced and very scarce. I know its a discontinued unit..but my pockets are not very deep.

There are bound to be junk ones somewhere that one can scrounge the part you are looking for.

This is actually one of the projects on my list (long list) of things to do. My choke kicked the bucket a while ago and you're right, they are way too expensive to replace. I removed the choke and rigged something up temporarily so that it starts but I can only get a certain window of performance out of this adjustment so it runs a little rich. I too have been looking for junk units to scavenge but the carb and related components are usually the first things removed before you get to them. I'm also thinking of trying to rig up a choke off a marine engine carb. Keep us posted on anything you come up with. I probably won't get to mine for a while but would also welcome ideas now.

I suppose you could rig up a manual choke with a push/pull cable but by the time/money you do that, you'd probably be better off just replacing the electric choke. Onanparts.com is a pretty good source. It looks like they have the chokes for $75

I unfortunately have a Spec G generator. The choke heating coil and rebuild kit is around $500................and I've only found one or two places that have them. WAY too deep for my pockets. I guess I have to load up all my tools and anthing else I can think of to take to the boat to try to install a manual choke. It is a 2 hr drive each way............bummer. "Junk" chokes probably have not much life left.................if I'm correct that heating coil is hot all the time.

I think you are right about the heating coil being hot all the time. It gets it's voltage from the AC windings if I remember correctly.

What is bad/broken with your choke? Is the spring itself broken?

ran into this last yr.. I took the choke off of mine, and put the new gaskets and needle set in it..and updated the point system to electronic system..

I've started it in temps as low as 30 degrees f. The way I do it is turn it over for 3 to 4 seconds wait about 10 seconds and hit it again it starts 80% of the time on the second hit..I also replaced the coil and plugs with the cck models..and once you get in the habit of running and full loading it the better it'll run for you.. and you can find almost everything you need on E-bay, jacksmallenginerepair.com
