My home Port of Edmonds WA has switch to the E

-10 and was wondering if anyone has been running E-10 in thier 78 F-32 Stock 360s without modifications.

you can check some old post there's lots of info...here's the short version of some of the hell your in for,
as far as burning the stuff listen for spark knock under heavy loads, I had to take 1 degree off base timing to get it to stop. my 454's have thunderbolt 4 smartboxes..
replaced both carb's corn gas eats the old style gaskets
check all your GAS lines make sure they're rated for corn gas....auto hose won't cut it...
if you have old gas tanks the corn gas will wash 30 yrs of gas varnish off the walls and glog up fuel filters I always have 6 on the boat (all 3 engines use the same one)
and the gas pumps will most likely bite the bullet next season.
and alot of opinions on leaving tanks full or empty ....I fill mine and before the end the season put about 32oz's of store it in the tanks and seal the vents....its worked so far....I just take it easy on the first trip in the spring...if you need more info ask....

You may have no issues and then again you maybe seeing sea tow a lot .
I have seen it both ways .
Check your fuel hoses Make sure its USCG TYPE A1 SAE J1527 if your not sure replace them . check your filler hoses should be type A2 , they may be old and cracked too .
Carry spare filters check and change after the first tank .
And if you can wait before filling , let someone else burn the marinas first tank of fuel ( thats cleaned out the marinas tanks )

IF you have a choice, then NO!

We were getting 100% gasoline here for awhile. Last season it switched to a brand of E-10 called "Captains Choice", which apparently has additives in it to help reduce harmful effects. I say its utter BS. E-10 is E-10. Just wait till E-15 comes along if you wanna see problems.
Avoid it if you can, but I suspect you can't. Its only going to get worse from here as subsidies to farmers increase in tandem with tightening emission standards.

I do have a choice but it cost me about $30.00 in fuel to get to the good stuff. I have been avoiding E-10 but feel I will have no choice in the future.
There are other guys on the dock with inboards in the late 80 vintage and claim they had no trouble. So I was trying to find out from some of you who have the same set up as mine and who have made the switch just what problems they had if any.

My choice would be no also. Our marina has no E10 so I run the good stuff but have in the past, used fuel with E10. I run the boat a lot so I don't have any issues but long term exposure to running the E10 will get you...

Ran E10 in my OB and I/O - its awful - back to real gas agaon (couldn't get it for a while).
Ruined my fuel pump on the 454 I/O.

pros and cons, I went through the he!! of the change over.
con, spent money fixing what that gas ate or clogged up it sucked and had very little knowledgeable help in what the he!! was going on ...learn alot about my engine room...
pro, my boat now can burn it, and I don't worry about. There's marinas that sell both here so when we're on a trip I buy the cheaper stuff sometimes it's .30 cents cheaper that adds up on a 250 gallon fill up or if you can't get real gas you have no worries....
But for us gassers I'd put changing over to the corn gas fuel hose on my winter to do list

Buying E10 saves nothing, as it produces about 5-10% less power, so you end up with less gas mileage and break-even or lose money overall, even with a 5-10%/gallon price savings up front.
It will absorb water more readily and quickly does "phase separation" (2-3 months) into a useless mess as you see below from my Chaparral's fuel tank - had to get rid of 100 gallons - great savings, huh?
The dark, phase separate (watery) fluid at the bottom does NOT burn.
Here is a short video of the stuff out of my boat:
http://RNR-Marine.com/Mack-Attack/MOV01 ... er-Gas.MP4
Worthless political maneuver. Tried and failed in the 1980s, where it ate the fuel injection in my new sports car.

Ross,
That's the best summation I've seen yet. Every American in the country should send a copy of your post to their congressional reprensentatives.
NASCAR tried to avoid the the milage issue too. But green flag runs were shorter all season long due to poorer fuel milage.
Great Post!

Ross, you'll get no argument from me on E-10 and H.P. drop..but when we're cruising most of it's done at 8 knots hull speed. that's why I use it then. But for high speed travel and winter months, good ole' gas for sure....

At ANY speed, you're wasting power and fuel. You're getting about 10% less mileage no matter what speed you go.
If you run your boat for 8 hours exactly at idle and don;t care how far you went, then I suppose less evil than pouring water in the tank

Overall, there is NO need for E10 or E15 in the US.
The math doesn't work out:
1) It takes more energy to produce Ethanol than it produces,
2) The amount of fuel that is dumped when it goes bad far exceeds
the perceived benefits in boats,
3) Fuel mileage and power (always an issues in a boat) are reduced 5-10% or more (more for E15,
4) It phase separates and absorbs water quickly, so it goes bad in 2-3 months,
5) Damage to components and dangers from fires caused by leaks when the ethanol eats your seals and leaks do not justify its use in boats.
There is no good argument for ethanol - except special interest groups representing corn farmers.
Bad idea -letting government pretend to be engineers (they failed pretending to be financial advisors and economists).
RANT-ON: the government should simply govern. period. :RANT-OFF
We need to turn to Natural Gas and leave the "fossil fuels" for vehicles and boats.

ya...ok... now back to the reason for the post.....
