Well,

a) if you look at the Whitaker Trojan lineup for 1973, there was no 50'er, and

b) the biggest Trojan in 1973 was 53', not 50'.

If you are talking about this http://www.yachtworld.com/boats/1976/Tr ... ted-States it's BS.

OUR Trojan never made a trawler. The closest they ever got was a 40' aft cabin model that I can't actually find any good pics of right now, but there are a handfull of members on the forum that have them. Damn - it annoys me that I can't think of the official designation - I think it is the F-40 Motor Yacht.

Hummm ...

NADAGUIDES lists a 48' Trawler for 1977 (and 1976):
http://www.nadaguides.com/Boats/1977/Trojan-Yacht :
  • F-44/FE - 44'
    F-44/FM - 44'(INBD,Fiberglass,14,2/355/Gasoline)
    F-44/FM - 44'(INBD,Fiberglass,14,2/410/Diesel)
    HARDTOP 54/MY - 54'(INBD,Fiberglass,16,2/330/Gasoline)
    HARDTOP 54/MY - 54'(INBD,Fiberglass,16,2/450/Diesel)
    TRAWLER 48 - 48''
In 1977, Whittaker/Trojan offered a "Meridian 48' Long Range Yacht " with twin diesels and a 9'x14' Teak pilothouse.

If this is it, it certainly LOOKS like a trawler (but it says it is Fiberglas, which is wrong):

For sale (with twin Detroits, and the trim looks Trojan-ish, and the pilot house appears to be about 9'x4'): http://www.yachtworld.com/boats/1976/Tr ... ted-States

Still researching....
the advert added hilton to convey luxury accomodations, as a play on words. the boat is just a trojan. there was never a 'trojan hilton' motor yacht. just a trojan motor yacht.

tri cabin aaron
I was inclined to agree with you Aaron, but had to edit my post after reading the fine print in the 1971 ad. It seems indeed they called it the Trojan Hilton , and not just as an advertizing ploy aimed at drawing a correlary to the hotel chain, but as a semi-official model name. In my world its still a 47, 50, or 53 Motor Yacht, but apparantly at least the 50 was indeed called the Trojan Hilton, and not just in the marketing realm.
hmmmm, the marketing/pr major in me is stumped then. the hilton name, at least when the ad came out was not given out just for the heck of it. trade marks were really regulated and guarded back in the 1970's-'80's. even more so than today. remember the old commercials comparing, say TIDE to BRAND X? it probably slipped past the hilton legal team at the time, but, hey, anything can happen. thanks for the info though.

I've been on one of these boats and it was really nice. Huge main salon and nice wheel house. I can't remember what the deck house was made of but the hull was fiberglass. Talking about rare Trojans, I just saw a f-24 for the first time. It kind of looks like someone took the flybridge and pushed it down into the hull.

Show me a picture of one in a Trojan brochure - or the Trojan logo on this one - and I might believe it. I wish I could (easily) post images from a PDF but can't be be bothered farting around with photobucket tonight. From '79 to '84 Trojan made a Trojan 40MY, which was a flushdeck style as I talked about in my previous post - and that's the closest to a trawler I have ever seen or heard of in real life or in any brochures.

From Powerboat Guide : 40'3" long, 14'3" beam. "Dual mode hull capable of economical operation at slower displacement speeds and planing-speed performance with larger engines.... Salon measures a full 10' x 13'...... 310-hp 6-71N diesels cruise at 14-15 knots and top speed in neighbourhood of 17 knots. At an 8-knot displacement speed she gets an honest 1mpg".

Writeup goes on to say "The Trojan 47 Yacht Fisherman (1981-82) is the same boat with a cockpit extension".

Maybe Beacon Bob can set the record straight?

I think we are looking at this thing.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Meridian-48-Fib ... 0508143836

Note the Whittaker logo in the ad.

Here is some more info I found:

Meridian 48-The hull mold was not made by Columbia, it was purchased from some failed company. I do not remember what the name was but they were located in Santa Ana, California. I will research and see if I can find out who build the hull mold and did the design. Columbia built an interior mold and also a stock deck mold. All of the engineering was done for the stock boat and 1 (maybe 2) were built in Costa Mesa. There was also one built with flush deck single engine work boat configuration, it was designed to be a Gulf shrimper or as a commercial trawler fishing boat for Mexico. There was some connection with people in Mexico for commercial boats but I do not know what it was. It was determined that Columbia was not the "right" builder for the boat and it was shipped off to Bertram/Trojan another division of Whittaker. As I recall the I.D. logo for the Meridian was "Meridian 48" in "arched chromed script" about 3 inches high and 18 inches long.

I think I've found something, I think it may be a Trojan/Shepherd 50', built by Trojan just after purchasing Shepherd. Look at this link to the old Shepherd Brochure, let me know what you think. VERY Similar, to say the least?

Yeh no doubt. Looks very similar. I had some more info on that thing before I got distracted by the 'trawler'. I'll see if I can find it again.

Care to expound on "humm", or were you just musing out loud? :P

I think we have both the Shepard and the Meridian nailed.

And then completely OT. My ragbagger friend is coming home next Thursday Ross. We are gonna make a decision on that blowbote then.

We've been watching this boat for awhile now, and noticed another thread here with many differing opinions. Broker has it listed as a wood hull, 1973, 47'. I'm not convinced.... it looks much bigger, and does not look wood to me. Another poster stated that it IS fiberglass, but I don't see how a broker could make such a big mistake.

I'm just not finding anything on a 1973 wooden hull 47' Trojan, so it seems that something about it isn't correct. Your thoughts?

We have a 36' 1974 Tri Cabin now, looking for a liveaboard with a bit more room.

Thanks!
Back to the OP ...

In MY options, I'd say its "Trojan's 1973 47' Motor Yacht (wooden) with the less expensive twin gas option (your seller's ad claims twin 350hp, but they offered twin 325s or twin 330s, both probably Chrysler 360s or 440s)- http://boatspecs.iboats.com/Trojan_Yach ... p/66b98271, Power:

620 hp diesel with 2 engines ( 310 hp diesel per engine)
640 hp diesel with 2 engines ( 320 hp diesel per engine)
650 hp with 2 engines ( 325 hp per engine)
or 660 hp with 2 engines ( 330 hp per engine)

In fact it has been re-powered , the engines are list as 1984 454 crusaders . Not a option 1973 for sure .

The Broker sent us the survey, it looks pretty good. Actually, excellent. The Hull Number is 602-3014. Any thoughts on the hull #? Still not convinced it's a Trojan 47
