Water heater

My f28 came with a 12 gal 120 v water heater. My question is with a raw water cooling system can you use engine cooling water in a heater that has both electric and engine water or do you have to have a fresh water system?

my boat has and will only be used in non-salt water.

Yes you can. Done all the time with raw water cooling also.

Larry, I didn't know you have fresh water lakes in Texas, or are you in a river upstream from the Gulf? I'll have to do the Google Maps thing and take a look.

I see you guys have quite a few lakes there. Learn something new every day here!

Lake Texoma is the big one and one can go to the Red River at Shreveport/Bossier LA, From there one can go via locks all the way accross Louisiana to the Mississippi to points East if one was so inclined.

Both are about 120 miles from me.

Do you just plumb the water out of the intact through the heater and back to the exhaust manifolds?

Comes from and back to the engine/block not exhaust manifold. You want hot water from the engine so not taken from the intake. What engines do you have? Perhaps someone with the same set up can let you know how theirs is plumbed in or take a picture for ya. In and out locations from the engine depend on the make. Some T off the large 2 inch hose at the front of the engine, water circ pump, intake manifold, T-stat housing, drain on side of block...depends.

I have 318s and are not freshwater cooled. Thanks for the picture but mine are different not having heat exchange tanks.

Hi Larry,

I don't know how much it will help you since I have Chev/MerCruiser but the two connections for my water heater lines on the engine are at the water pump (circulation pump on the front of the engine) and at the intake before the thermostat. These are basically the same points used by the heater core in a car. The reason for this is that the water at these points is circulating thru the block and heads and is always at the same temp as the engine. And yes, my engine is raw water cooled.

Hope this helps,

I think I need a new cutlass bearing for the shaft strut on Port side.
I have a 28' FB Trojan, 1978. Anyone know where to aquire one ? I am in FT. Pierce, Fla.

Thanks,
Jim

Jim, you should start another thread for that. You may have better luck just in case not everyone is reading this thread due to subject, and we want to stick to this particular topic here.

Thanks Paul,

I will examine my water flow as compared to what you have, the hot water after thermostat has to come out somewhere, I will study it.

I have examined my raw water cooled 318 and the only warm/hotwater exit is the two hoses from top of thermostat housing that run to the back of the log exhaust manifolds.

Anyone want venture a guess would this water be 140 degree as that is what the thermostat is?
