so im curently sitting on my boat still trying to figure out what to do with my septic problem and i suddenly feel like the boat hit something.... not cool

its been windy all day and the boats been rocking and creaking but no biggie... i walk outside to find the dock bumpers completely gone, the spring line torn and the back of my platform hitting the dock... ouch, and to make it all even worse the hinge on the swim ladder is halfway tore off and the swim platform trim is all tore up.... great.... thanks mother nature, 70 yest and sunny, 40 today and 30mph wind... WTF?

Don't whine about it.

Mother Nature will hear you...and if she doesn't like what you're saying, she'll pounce on you, on some calm sunny day when you're out enjoying the boat!

Sounds like you need better lines and do some chafe protecting

well the messed up part is that i have brand new 5/8 lines (about a month old) and its weird that it broke... and its not like it broke at the cleat, it was right down the middle, now i gota figure out how im going to fix the huge gash on my ladder... possibly fabricate a metal hinge with an extension that wraps around the whole bottom of the platform out of stainless at work....

Broke in the middle thats strange , any chafing ? maybe it chafed on the rub rail ? what type of line ?

Always secure your boat for the worst, as the worst obviously happens. I over secure mine when I leave her tied at the dock and have never been in a bind. I operated OSV's offshore for many years and have seen 3" lines shred from wind loads on a vessels out there... try carrying a sheet of plywood in a mild wind and see how much it'll push you around... add a current and wave force and a 5/8" line will snap like dental floss.

Thats what happened to me, the line snapped just like dental floss, my boat is the last one towards the water on a 50 slip dock so i get with the current and the wind fairly hard and that line just snapped right in the center, no chafing or anything of that sort, it was doubled up however the secondary line wasn't as tight and i guess when it went under load it just had barely enough room to smash the end of the dock with the swim platform, thankfully the wind has calmed down today and ill be working on completely retying her up and go get some new dock cushions as the ones i had are MIA....guess it just wasnt my day

Was this 5/8 doublebraid? Takes a lot of force to snap those. Usually 6 to 8 tons depending on quality. You could go for AmSteel Blue lines for your springs if you feel like paying about 5 bux a foot for them. Your cleats will likely rip out before a 5/8 AmSteel line will snap in that application.

Unless its chafed a good 5/8 line should not have broken under those conditions , you never did say what type of line .

5/8 west marine braided lines held my boat through the hurricane this yr give them a shot and a few nor'easter too...

Same lines I use ,no issues with their lines . Been using them for years

yes, expensive as hell compared to other brands but apparently has its fair share of flaws

I guess it happens.. but WOW i didn't thing the wind was that bad the other day..was she tied in away she could have put quick snaps on the line instead of pulling on the line...that would've done it....
