Anyone Know What These Switches Do ?? 10 meter Express

Gents,

I'm trying to figure out what these 3 switches control that are on my dash.

1) The "accessory" switch on the left side of the dash (see pic). I'm assuming its for accessories, but which accessories?

2) The "accessory" switch on the right side of the dash (see pic). I'm assuming its for accessories, but which accessories?

3) The "nav-anc" switch on the right side of the dash. I have no idea what this is for?

Hi,

I believe that the accessory switches are there for "adding an accessory" after purchase and it is prewired through the breaker panel. You will have to figure out if any previous owner used them to switch an added accessory, such as cockpit lights, search light, blower fan etc

the NAV ANC should be a three postion switch and operate your navigation lights in one position and the anchor light in the other position , usually off in the center

Navigation lights must be used if you are operating the boat from sunset to sunrise, and should also be used during the day if visibility is poor. Number and position of lights you have to have depends on boat size, but in general you will have port (red) and starboard (green) lights, a mast head light (seen from in front of you) and a stern light (seen from behind). Each of the lights has a specific 'arc of visibility', meaning it depends on someone's orientation to the direction your boat is heading as to which lights they can see.

With the regs on placement and arc of visibility, someone can get idea of what kind of boat they are looking at and which direction it is heading, based on based on what lights are visible.

If you anchor the boat between sunset and sunrise, you must display a different lighting pattern - a 360degree white light must be visible at all times. Again, this tells people what's going on.

The US Power and Sail Squadron probably has chapter near you (http://www.usps.org/), and will offer basic training in things like boat handling and safety on the water, including lighting requirements, required safety gear and how to use it, handling lines properly, safe and secure anchoring, marine communications (VHF radio), basic navigation and reading of charts, etc.....

You should check them out.

There shoud be an all around white light on a staff or on your radar arch, that would be your anchor light.

Most if not all of the anchorages in San Diego, Mission Bay and the Catalina moorings are Designated Anchorages, and do not require the use of an anchor light, if you do head out the Coronado Islands, you would be required to have an achor light on there. ( however, you would be in Mexico, and right now I woudl advise against that trip)

If your boat has a radar unit installed, the factory anchor light might have been removed. The light on the windshield is the "NAV" (running) light and couldn't be in a worse spot.

Since you're doing all this work, I would pull that wire back up to the arch and install a dedicated NAV light. That's what I did and then I used the factory wiring hidden under the dome and installed a dedicated LED anchor light. I got one with a removable mast and just pull it in/out when I need it. 99% of the time you don't need an anchor light so it's stowed until I do. With this setup, both sides of the switch work as intended.

Trust me, having the anchor light in front of your face kills your vision....

Bob, agreed, I removed the goofy nav anchor light on my F-32, that is right in the line of sight.

that anchor light is completely pointless since its covered up by my enclosure, thinking of removing it as well and repositioning elsewhere
