Onan 6.5 KW removal possible?
Hey!. I want to remove and sell my nice working 6.5 kW onan. My question is: " can this genset be disassembled into large basic components and removed from the boat while it is in the water? I will not be hauling the boat this spring. Anyone that has some input on this would be mucho appreciated.

Me and a couple of guys (4) removed the same genny from a Tri. It took four of us and lots of muscle but yes, it can be done...
Straps around genny, hoist, slide and lift up through companion way, hoist onto back deck and off the boat it goes...it's a tight fit but it will come out.

Why are you taking it out?!?! I have one that is being re-habbed and hope to go back in!
I'm in the same boat as you, and they are heavy mothers. A 6.5 kw weighs 420#. By the time I liquor four of my friends up enough to tackle the job, we'd make a mess of the whole deal!
Find a local dock builder in your area. They have hoists on their barges and will yank that genset right out and onto the dock for you. That's how I'm sticking my genset back aboard.

Removal of 6.5 kw Onan
Thanks for the input guys. I'm removing it cause my Tri-Cabin is just a floating apartment for me to work in midtown manhattan. The engines are locked up but the Onan is perfect but useless unless I get a power outage which we didnt get at the marina even during Irene. Since the genny weighs over 400 lbs has anyone taken the generator part off the engine so it can be removed in two sections? If I can get the genny out I will list it for sale at a very reasonably price here on the forum. If I can't, ....oh well. Of course, if someone on this forum thinks they can get it off my boat and will assist with hoists and muscle then the price would be VERY VERY reasonable!

removing this vintage onan should not be too bad a problem other than the actual muscle required to lift her out of the bilge and up the steps onto the helm station. remember, you will also need to lift her down from the helm onto the aft cockpit area as this type of tri cabin is not the redesigned 'flush deck' version of later years. i remember when my dad, brother, myself and mr. humenik and his two sons installed our 7.5kw kohler genset in our tri cabin in june of 1972. our tri cabin did not have the standard onan installed at the factory (much to the displeasure of the selling agent), but, the sea cock and exhaust port were installed. we opted for the kohler. anyway, this beast was a huge generator, 4 cylinder and came equipped with a heat exchanger. the entire unit was hauled by hand onto the boat at tantallon marina in ft. washington, md. (believe it or not, the marina still exists!) the genset was then lifted by everyone onto the back deck and then onto the helm deck. the decks were teak and covered in thick, heavy cardboard with plastic underneath along with foam. the genset was then slid down the salon steps that had wood covering them as a ramp. my brother and i were taking care of the front of the genset and mr. huminek and dad had the back. we then positioned it over the hatch and dropped her in. i forget how much this thing weighed in at, but, i can tell you this, it was not light as the block and most of it was made of cast iron. if we can push this thing into the salon door of a tri cabin, the onan should be a breeze to remove.

6.5 kw Onan removal?
Thanks for the story, Aaron. Makes me want to keep it right where it is Ha! Ha! Ha! Seriously though folks. If there's anyone out there in Trojan-land who can come up with the tools, muscle and padding to take this thing out of my boat, the price would be adjusted accordingly (i.e I'm thinking 1/2 the going price). I would, of course help as well. I'm thinking the generator can be removed from the engine so it can be taken out in 2 pieces. The whole package would include the exhaust and raw water pump, hoses, etc. Hail Mary's additional.

Re: 6.5 kw Onan removal?
i've just finished looking over my .pdf files for the onan (parts and operations manuals) and removing the 'stator/generator' housing is a lot easier said than done. the entire unit was designed to be installed and removed in one small 431lbs package. if you want, send me an email and i will forward the pdf file to you.risctaker wrote:Thanks for the story, Aaron. You may not need as much muscle as you think if you think th eproject though on how to rig it properly.
here are a few photos of the engine installs I just completed, I know its a little (or a lot) easier on a sedan, but I had to figure out a way to get two V-8's up out of the engine room, and then on to the back deck, in order to lift them out with a hoist at our club (the hoist at the club made things a lot easier)
So I built an A frame arrangment with "sockets at the top to support a cross arm member (from a power pole) which is true demisnion 5" x 6" this spanned the enigne compartment fore to aft.
I then used a chain hoist to lift the engines out of the engine room, I slid the access panel back in place, slid two pieces of 5/8" plywood over the top of the panel and over the sliding door sill out to the cockpit, which I also had a sheet of 5/8" plywood, I used the cheap sheathing plywood and cut them to fit through the door.
Anyways, I used a heavy duty furniture dolly, which I lowered the engines on to, and rolled the engines out of the sliding door on to the aft deck and then picked them out with the hoist.
I reversed this procedure to install the new engines. the heaviest thing I had the physically lft was the chain hoist when I hung it from the cross beem.
I'm sure you could rig up a couple of frames and use a come-a-long or chain hoist to do the same.
notice in the photos that I put a 2X4 under thre A-frame legs across the cabin sole trying to spread the load.
I must say though, if the generator runs good, why not leave it. you might get the engines running, or when you go to sell, it will make to boat more desireable.

Thanks for that input and the photos. Much Appreciated. I have to re-evaluate the whole project on an effort vs benefit basis. The only curent benefit I am getting from having the Onan in the boat right now is to ensure power for winter heat if the marina craps out. Other than that re-sale as you have pointed out. No chance in getting the engines running - they are locked up tight. Had three mechanics look at them and pulled the plugs, soaked the cylinders in "engine release" for 2 weeks then used a 3 ft breaker bar on the flywheel pulley. Nearly bent the breaker bar in half! So...am in the process of parting out the drivetrain. I have a pending buyer for one of the Walter Z-Drives but the other one as well as the 2 x velvet drives trannys are in good shape and can be sold. That along with items like carbs, alternators, raw water pumps, distributors, etc etc.

hi steve, i've tried for the better part of an hour to send you those pdf files, i've even tried compressing them but for some reason, they just will not go through via aol or gmail. i've sent you an email link, i think, using adobe online. let me know if that works. personally, i'd keep the thing in there, run her once a week w/ a load on her to keep things working. they are designed to run, not sit in the bilge as an anchor. besides, what would you do w/ the seacock once you did remove it?risctaker wrote:Thanks for that input and the photos.
