I am planning to replace the old 12 gal 110 v water heater on our 77 F-26. It's tucked away behind the starboard engine room bulkead, ahead of the head holding tank. I'm looking at how to get it out of this tight space and it looks like the only way is going to be to make room for the removal by taking off the exhaust manifold and hose That should give me enough room to (1) first remove the holding tank and then (2) remove the hot water heater. I figured if I'm going to be pulling the holding tank I'm also going to update the plumbing and possibly replace the holding tank (aka "The Whole Enchilada) as all of this stuff is "stock" from 30 years ago ( I have the original paperwork).

Any ideas? Any last minute thoughts before I start tearing the boat apart?

If you're doing this while in the water, make sure you plug your thru transom exhaust or hang the exhaust hose high in the bildge so no water will come in when you remove your mufflers. If it doesn't come in immediately don't think that it won't later on when you leave that boat for the night. The wind my shift and start blowing from the stern and push the water right into the boat.

Thnaks, Ken. What with me focusing on getting the water heater out, I'd probably forget and sink the damned boat! Most likely, this will be a winter project since I don't use the water heater all that much during the season (we have showers where we dock the boat). Next year we're taking her on the Erie Canal for an extended cruise and then it'll be nice to have hot water on the boat.
