Couples of minutes ago I had to read that a big Marina in Hamburg was destroyed by fire. Fortunately our vessel
is winterized in Berlin but no one of us should happen something like this.
Over 20 sailing yachts and Powerboats in the building are burning out and gasoline that is running out
fired boats outside too.
I hate to see or hear about something like this. Hopefully no one was hurt. A very sad day for sure.

On a positive note, I'm proud to say that most of us boaters are a special bunch. Here we are half way around the world, different in many ways but much alike all the same; we can all agree that such incidents are tragic, and that we feel for fellow boaters that have just lost thier pride and joy no matter where they call home (or the colour of thier beer!!).

my partner wanted to know why these fires burn so totally. he's a contractor and i'm stunned that he even asked this when he has learned (or so i hope) a little bit about boating from our boating experience and the knowledge base i've gathered growing up in and around boats. i explained to him, and guys, please correct me (be nice now) if i'm wrong, but, i told him that the construction of the boats, fiberglass, resins, wood, canvas, oil, fuel just add to the mix plus oxygen make these fires so hot and complete. am i wrong in my assessment?
thanks fellas.
again, i'm glad no one was hurt in the fire. hopefully those affected will be okay.
it just breaks my heart when i see things like this, knowing that the owners love their boats as much as we love ours.

horrible. it happened here in 2001 at the lynnhaven marine boatel, someone left a a bildge pump runnig and it burnt over 300 boats. total loss. it was real bad. but i keep my ski boat there now, its very strict and very advanced now LOL
Very sad, Aaron you are correct the materials that boats are made out of are made mostly from oils when they burn they give off fumes that burn, the fuel tanks heat up and push out vapors that burn when they are in a building hot gasses build up till they reach about 1600 degrees and then everything will flash at one time and create a huge fire the fire is consuming so much oxygen that it will start pulling things into the fire like canvas and fuel vapor from boats that are not yet burning. boats will burn so hot that it is hard to get enough water on the fire to cool it to stop giving off the gasses that burn, I saw that they were putting foam on the fire in the one picture which has a higher surface strength than water so it will stick better to objects you are trying to cool, problem is that not all fire cmpanys have foam or enough of foam ( expensive class b $180.00 5 gallons mixed at 3% with water ), so one company puts foam on and the others wash it off with water. big problem with big fires.
