What kind of wood would you use for "pin-rails" as I call them? I need to screw something into the stringers to help support the plywood platform the generator sits on as well as my water tank. The old ones looked like mahagony or something dark. I plan on sealing with epoxy first and am trying not to spend more than I need. the old one were just 1x3. Pine is too soft. I have alot of poplar and oak laying around. Just not sure what would make sense?

For fastener holding power, go with the oak, prefferably white oak; more resistant to rot. Encapsulate the oak, and caulk anywhere you penetrate the coating (screws, bolts etc).

Found white oak at Home Dep thanks to a suggestion from alexander38. Figure I'll run it through the table saw to cut the tounge and groves off. Thought about running through a planner as well but the groves on the back side should help hold alittle more caulk (plus I really dont feel like digging the planner out!) For $48 I should have plenty to support the plywood for the gen in the bilge as well as for the misc rails in the cabin. Thanks For the advice everyone!

I tried 4 local lumber yards and no one had any in stock. I figure I needed 40 to 50 lf of wood. comes out to $1 per linear foot. (I guess my wifes right, I can justify anything! LOL)
