I run raw water cooling in my boat and was told 140 degrees. The guy who told me said that hotter then that and you could begin crystalizing whatever minerals are in the water.

The manual calls for 140 but they are not available, atleast I could not get them, I used 142 from Beacon and should be fine. I had a discussion with Paul (prowlerfish) and learned that an thing much over 160 causes salt water to crystalize and do its damage much quicker.
Incidentally mine did not have any in it which was PO try to take care of over heat problems, the problem was stopped up tranny oil coolers, the water could not get by to the engine.

What engines? 140 Should be it. Here's another thread, if you're running Chryslers.

140s are hard to find because they try to run car engines hotter these days.
Keep looking - they're around though.

Make sure you get the right one.
There are two different kinds, one that looks like an automotive kind:
http://www.trojanboats.net/zencart/inde ... cts_id=413
And one that looks like something entirely different and just redirects the water.
http://www.trojanboats.net/zencart/inde ... cts_id=407
I think which kind depends on the intake manifold and how the cooling system is plumbed.

well the first one say with rochester carbs. mine are carter carbs. why would that make a difference? and the other one is way over priced. 84 bucks you gotta be kidding.

I know on my chrysler 440 it will overheat with the wrong style thermostat no matter what temp. The outer brass secrion moves down to close off a passage in the housing to direct flow. Without a thermostat it will overheat in 5 minutes. Learned that one the hard way. OJT

There is an old one you cannot obtain any longer, it was referred to as the "Top Hat" thermostat as that is what it looked like.

It was impossible to find the small diameter 140's for my old Interceptors; someone had used ones for $50 each (each engine takes two). I went to West Marine and found a 140 degree thermostat that had the same inside dementions as my old ones and then ground down the outer diamenter of the thermostat to fit.
Problem solved for $50 total all four thermostats and they"re new.

Look at
http://www.marinepartssource.com and search for 142 degree thermostat. You will find they have them for around $17.00 each for raw water cooling. The chryslers with carter carbs use the 142 degree and the rochester carbs use the 140 degree.
Chrysler part number is 3527765

As long as we're not substituting automotive for marine t-stats; there are differences; by-pass ports, materials etc. Material wise, remember that some apps are raw water cooled, and cars don't have to deal with that or the corrosion (there's that word again) issues that arise from dissimilar metals. I also recall something about spring loading or direction to prevent overheat in a t-stat failure but that could be for all stats now.
Larry, the "top hat" design may be pictured in vabeach's 2nd link.
