Fly bridge ignition problem

Hi everyone. I have been a sometimes reader of the forum and found it very useful since I bought my 1982 F-32 last year.

I tried to see if anyone had posted ignition problems before but didn't see anything. My strb ignition upstairs doesn't make any horn noise and won't start or kill the engine. I have to constantly go down stairs for that one.

Any suggestions on what I should do to track down the problem and correct it?

I would start at the upper ignition switch, check for continuity within the switch,

I would then check the lower switch for the same,

do you have a wiring schematic for your boat?

Yes I do have a schematic in the owners manual. I just did a little more searching and found a 2009 post that "A TAD Too Much" had some answers for and yes what you are right. I will do the most the most simple thing first and check continuity upstairs then down next. Thanks for your response!

Besure to also check the 12 volt reset breaker, (most likely no issue with it...) on rear of engine. As suggested, check both SB ign switches for good contact.

i know its obvious, but it would seem the problem is somewhere within the upper and lower switches, there is a nuetral safety switch if you have velvet drives, but neither ignition switch would work if this were an issue

Thanks for those tips as well. I'm dying to get down there to try all these things if it weren't for being out of town for the next there days. Airports are no fun, boats are, even if I'm working on them

Its not neutral safety or ignition breaker if it works on one station and not the other. Its wiring or the bridge toggle.

If you have the old 70's style teardrop ignition switches and one of them is shot its probably time to move to either key switches or the late 70's/80's style factory toggle ignition switches if they are still available or an analog which may be able to be sourced.

is this an out there suggestion? One of my first tasks when face with problems on my boat is to swap out the parts in question and see if the problem switches to the other engine. So in this case instead of breaking out meters could you not just swap the wires?

Thanks Comissionpoint and roofer Dave. Switching out the switches makes sense and I might know immediately. Then it will a matter of seeing if it can be salved or time for a new style switch. Thanks guys
