after you remove the old name, how do you get the rest off

Just buy a selfsticking batch like 'No parking allowed' and stick it to the back

you can use lacquer thinner to get the sticky stuff off

And if you can still see the name try lightly wet sanding it .

If its glue, use 3M Adhesive Remover.

no worries here. Thinner is the cheapest and will remove the glue, move around, dont stay in one spot a long time, If you have not done it yet, use a heat gun on low and most glue will stay on the sticker. If your oxidation is bad and light water sanding isnt going well. you can use 800 grit to knock it down fast. Step up to 1200 or 1500 to kill sand scratches. Wipe clean and buff with compound using a real buffer, not a cheap orbital buffer, Borrow an electric grinder and put a white whool buffing pad on it. You will need the high tork no matter what you decide to do. Dont be afraid to use com0pound, If your dry buffing you can get to hot and cause more damage, have any pics of what your working on?

this is what I do at work, on white it some time leaves a yellow stain if you push hard. easily sanded and buffed away +1

I have used easy off oven cleaner - that is a great marine secret and I am surprised no one mentioned it yet.

There is a a "proper way to rename a boat". It insures Posidon and Neptune do not get angry and do bad things to the boat, doesn't get the lettering off though.

There is a great, great product called "Goof Off" and can usually be found at Home Depot. Desolves adhesives like you have never seen.

I keep a can on the boat. Works on lots of stuff.

Easy Off will also remove single part paints in many cases, so be careful.

I second what Larry said. I used Goof Off and it seemed to do the trick.
