Why would i want to document a vessel?

So assuming that I'm not planning on visiting foreign ports, or getting a loan to pay for my boat, and that the idea of registration numbers near the bow doesn't bother me, what is the point of documenting a vessel, especially in Maryland? It looks like Maryland's governor Martin OweMalley requires payment of an excise tax even if the boat is documented.

What are the advantages of USCG vs. state registration? Thanks, Perry

You pay the registration 1 time and the yearly renewal is free ( if done on time ) .( some states still want you to pay reg. fees ) Can be useful if use for trade or when sold . I like having the name up on the bow in stead of numbers ( not necessary unless used for trade ) Maybe easier to recover if stolen . less hassel moving from state to state . I am sure there is more

Jeff they will have to do a history check on your boat ( $25 ) also you boat is right on the edge on size . there is good info on the above links . as far as what you have paid to the state it has no bearing on the CG documentation

In MD you still have to pay your $24 fee every 2 years, Doc or not. And your 6% tax up front

I just bought a usgc documented vessel. Title transfer was a breeze although I will eventually have to pay the sate of illinois close to $100 for registration stickers. Some states don't charge the fees for usgc documented vessels.

Today I went up to kenosha, wisconsin and after seeing several sheriff boats and the coast guard, I was like holy crap all, the paper work is at home and not on the boat!!

You are supposed to keep the paperwork on the boat.

By the way, The Charlie a 1978 F30 flybridge express. . . .she did 21 knots in 3 to 4 foot seas today!!! She handled in beautifully!!!!

I did some doughnuts too!!!!
