PowerWinch Windlass Question

On my 1986 10 Meter I have the original PowerWinch windlass. It works but it doesn't work. It won't grab the rope unless there is enough tension on it. The rope is 1/2 in. and it's very rigid. Could this be caused by the rope? I've taken the winch apart and the wheels notches are rather smooth so I was thinking that it's just worn but then I thought that if it had hard edges it could damage the rope. Any thoughts or insight would be great. Rather not buy a new one as there are more important projects on-board. I can always keep the manual way, well not manual for me but my sons. They hate it.
Thanks
Chris

Chris, I probably have the same model. I think it's a powerwinch 502 if I recall.
Mine works ok but there is about a 2-3 second delay before it starts coming up. It's just spins and then catches. I thought it was broken at first but I'm on my 3rd season with it and works fine. As an aside, I added a universasl keyfob style remote which they had on their website for $20, brand new. It also has a switch on the box in case I lose the remote.
Anyway, I would pop the cover off the side so you can actually see it working. You'll probably need to hold the roller in place while you're testing it, the cover does that when it's installed. Then, use some new 1/2" line and see if grabs and pulls it in as a test. There are some lubrication points in there as well.

That did it. I replace the old rope with 1/2 in. twisted nylon and it's working. Now my son very happy!!
Thanks for the advice.
Maybe I should start another threat but I have a question on a different topic. Having the 10 meter Express I've notice while looking at old picture and of some 10 meters being sold that they have a bench seat that runs the width of the transom. Do you know how I could get that bench seat??
Thanks again.

My bench seat is three seperate seats, the two on the port side are on brackets that tilt forward to give acess to the tilt out compartments, the one in front of the entry is fixed.
