10 meter mid cabin Hynautic steering rebuild question

Quick question for you guys who rebuilt your hynautic helm. Did anyone find an easy way to disconect the darn thing?? I removed my engine helm controls and can reach the fittings but will be working blind. I really want to limit the oil dripping everywhere. I tried to drain the system when I removed the rear pressure valve but there is still oil in the systems. any suggestions or tips would be appreciated.
Thanks
Todd

Lots of oil diapers of course make sure there is no pressure in the reservoir . I just replaced all the seals in mine yesterday ( started leaking on my vacation ) be careful pulling it a part . I would do it in a pan so you don't lose any parts . there is spring pressure when you take the allen screws out so again be careful .

Thanks for the tip on the pan! good Idea. How long did it take to rebuild? From what ive read it sounds fairly easy, I hope!

It was pretty easy , took me a hour or so from start to finish Not including running to get some orings as I had the wrong kit . I had a HS01 but needed the later kit HS02 . My helm date code was wrong or the Helm was updated with a later seal housing . early models called for a seal later used a O-Ring for the shaft seal .
I did a reseal not a real overhaul , are you replace the seals / o rings or replacing other parts ?

Todd, it is tough to reach. I was just able to reach the fittings through the cut out for my VHF. It didn't drip too bad, most of the fluid is probably downhill depending on how your boat is blocked....but your inside and probably weren't worried about the pitch.
I needed to go another 1/4 turn on one of the fittings and it's dripped a couple of drops a month since I rebuilt it. One thing that would be easy to do now would be installing a deck plate wheel or some storage unit/coaming box under the wheel. With that, you'd have easy access. I think I'm going to do that on mine.
Speaking of controls, now would be the time to replace them along with the cables. I know I'm spending your money

but you'll never have easier access than you do now.

Bob,
Thanks for the info. I've been thinking of some kind of access hole but I dont want it to look out of place. My controls have seen better days! I know you replaced yours and were really happy. What brand did you go with?

Prowlerfish,
I ordered the entire kit. (I hope it's the correct one!) I figured I might as well rebuild the entire thing once its out. The only good thing is I have a couple hundred dollars in viton o-rings to rebuild my spray guns, if I need one maybe I'll get lucky!
Thanks again,
Todd

Todd, they're Teleflex. I think they were around $500 for the pair (shift/throttle) and another $200 for the cables.
Even if you did the cables now, you could always swap the controls later. I went with the Teleflex extreme cables which is probably overkill but they weren't much more than the regular cables. I just installed the tensioning screws this weekend because the shifters were a little too loose. That's a problem I don't mind having
