Found a pair of 87 vintage Volvo 200 hp inline 6 cylinder diesels. Any idea how they would perform in my 77 F36?

Marinized? TAMD41? Should do OK - they won't in any races, but they're reliable and will last forever.
How much?
Check BoatDisel.com ...
Ran the boat today - running good ... might have to fish a tournament this w/e ... F32 is kind of overkill, but I can get a LOT of lines out!
VivaMahia Standing by on 16 ...

They are a liltle small HP wise for a F36 . What seires ? . Parts for Volvos are very high . How many hours ? with gears ? Taken care of they will last a long time . abused then then wont .
A lot of good info on boat diesel
there is a lot more to changing over to diesels then just changing the engines
But once you go diesel you won't go back

The engines are in a damaged boat so they will come with gears. I have very limited information right now and was wondering if it was worth pursuing. Cost should be very low, less than 5 K.

5K running with down angle gears?
well, I'd take them in a minute. I think the speed vs reliability / efficiency / safety trade isnt even a question!

heck yeah!! for 5k? if had that opportunity, i'd do it in a heartbeat. 200 hp diesels in the tri cabin would be perfect. not the fastest, but my god, they would last forever.

Considering that the gears are probably worth that price alone........ yeah I would take the chance.

Ran some numbers and with a pair of 200 hp diesels your top speed speed should be around 21-22 knots with a cruse of 16-17 . cruse is at 3000 with the top speed @3800 rpm ( rated rpm for the volvo 200hp TAMD41 )

how about for a tri cabin? just curious. not in it for the races but the economy would be great. and, would they fit?

Double check the date. That's on the cusp of being a TAMD41A or TAMD41B. If they are the B series, don't let em go- fantastic engines (I have a pair in my F-32) and they are essentially the same as the latest TAMD41P series and with a few upgrades to correct minor annoyances, they are a simple, reliable, compact and effecient engine.
If they are the A series... they'll work, but they are much less desireable. The A series were known smokers and they had a major redesign and the improvements were significant. Many tried to convert the A spec to B spec but the changes are many and costly.
Also- If the transmissions are the Volvo MS4 (or volvo MS3c)- be aware that these gears are no longer supported and are EXTREMELY expensive to repair. They have a known weakness in the clutch cones and the parts alone are close to a grand per gear. Thet had a lot of failures and many MS4's were replaced with MS3's because they are physically the same size BUT the MS3's can not handle 200HP and fail prematurely.

David,
Def. want at least the 41Bs (per my PM). The 41B had slightly different piston crowns and heads to address smoking on cold start-up.
JAV - what trans/prop combo are you using, and what speeds do you get?
300ft-lb(MedDuty) to 330ft-lb(Light-Duty) torque engines in a heavy F36 are marginal, IMO ...
That Ramgage was sweet ... looked at a few, but couldn't afford ...
