Launched the boat today after 2 years of lay up and updating. Tractor trailer to travel lift to water. It's awesome, ran great. My starters are crappy, and I want to replace them. I'll rebuild the old ones some other time. Any reccomendations here in the Washington DC or Annapolis/Baltimore area for retail Arco or other replacements? I know of Cobe Marine in Pasadena. Any others?

As far as the three batteries go, with 350's (7.4) and a 6.5 Onan Gen, Can you chime in on what your setup is (group/specs etc). I'd love to hear.
Its a 1984 11M Express, mains and gen original.

sorry cant help u with the store locations as i buy lots of this type of stuff online however i can tell you what i run in my boat

i had all of my batteries boil over on me (charger went on the fritz a few months ago) so i decided to replace them with diehard marine batteries... havent had a single issue thus far... 750 CCA

I have had very good luck with ARCO .
Bob at beacon ( the site sponsor ) has new ARCO for sale in the for sale section . The Ad says F boat but should be the same ( Bob can tel you )

I don't go with anything less than 1000 MCA/800 CCA anymore. 550-650 CCA for the genny should suffice. Both 24 series is fine.

Hi James. I too own a 1984 Trojan 11m (370) Express with the big blue gassers. My battery setup is 3 Trojan group 27's, one for each engine and one for the generator. They are 27SM-1100 with 860 CCA @ 0 degrees. I am happy with them, but Trojans are not in the least tolerant of a low water situation in the cells. I check them weekly. I use an 8D battery for my house battery. As far as brand of batteries, there are not that many manufacturers. When I need to replace, I will buy Kirkland brand from Costco. Good price, great warranty, made by Johnson Controls. The ones I have came with my boat. I'm looking at a starter replacement too. So far Arco looks real good. If the budget allows, the 4 cycle charge algorithm of a good quality Smart Charger minimizes the loss of electrolyte. Since installed, I still check but never worry about it any more; my batteries lose very little.

another good bookmark, im doing a 4 battery bank and 2 bank, this will be good info to look back on....

Which motor matches which starter?

Is the Port (LH350) the CW or the CCW starter?

Pretty sure it would be CCw, no?

be careful here

do not swap starters or have the rebuilder make a "mistake"

cranking an engine backwards from it's inteneded rotation could cause water ingestion.

Agreed, however, not all batteries are created equal. Don't be fooled into buying a lower cost brand because it's made by a company you know manufactures high quality units. That manufacturer will have a complete line that differs in quality/construction to accomodate a given brand's requirements; be it quality or affordability/price point; ie. you wouldn't find a $50 24 series battery from a big box store in my boat even if I knew it was manufactured by the same company that makes a $200 model of the same size.

A few notes

You can't always go by what side the engines are on . I was working on 2 Trojan meter boats last year , one boat had a CCW on the port (left) the other had the CW on the port (left )side .



The norm nowadays has become 2 normal rotating engines and using the transmissions to change direction ( been that way for years on diesels ) so if the boat has been re powered take note . you won't fine a counter rotating 5.3 or 6.0 .

You got that right it can be a big headache . both mine turn the same so its easy.
