This part came off a 1974 ONAN MCCK 6.5k that is in my tricab... the question is what is it called? i don't have the parts manual for the item and searching for one is proving to be VERY dificult, this is the only part that has burnt out and shuts down the genny right after start... holding the switch in makes it work just fine HOWEVER makes it glowing red....

i would highly apreciate it if someone can at least point me to the right place or a part number or something
(this part sits right next to the start switch on the top of the genny, right inside the controll box)

I believe it is a 'high temp cut-out switch'. My onan parts manual is on the boat.

Could possibly be the hi temp switch. If so, I have part number listed as
309-0257. Good luck.

I don't know what Spec a 1974 model is but you kinda need to know this bit of info to source the proper part. For instance the one I have is a Spec J, and is a 1983, even though its in a 1978 boat. Knowing what spec it is will help you greatly in getting the proper parts for your set both now and in the future.

The thermo switch on mine is threaded into the exhaust manifold and is basically a bi-metallic element which interrupts the ignition circuit if the temperature rises to a predetermined level. This thing you posted a picutre of is obviously some kind of overload protection, thermal, voltage, or otherwise, but I cant tell you which from here.

Before i left on deployment i tried to do a bit of research on this thing and after getting ahold of one of the onan mechanics in the area i was told that its purpose was to kill the engine if the oil pressure is to low.... so what my explanation was that it would send a current down from one coil to the other fairly much "shorting out" the circuit and forcing the engine to stop, the red button was just a reset or more of a breaker. The guy however didnt have a clue what the part number was nor where to get one of those switches

I have seen one of these for sale before for about $300 but unfortunately since that one run in i am unable to locate it again... and no clue what the spec is because as per the wife the identification plate doesn't list that.

i am too buddy. i am too. so, where exactly does this switch go? i've had experience with a 1976 mcck, spec d, but i've never seen anything like tat before. did you have any luck with ess-kay yards about the manual?

Seen a few different types used, it could be a charge circuit relay/breaker.

And it maybe doing its job .If you holding a breaker in and its getting hot , then there could be a short or over load in the circuit .

it was already burned out from the PO, and from the looks of it this was the only issue with this thing, however abviously i am going to do a full tune up on it

it mounts directly next to the start stop togle on the generator control box, aproximately 2 inches to the side of it
