Access to electrics at the helm?

ok, I hope you boys dont get tired of my constant postings, but its hard not to ask you guys , seems you know more than anybody about these boats and have been a tremendous help to me
anyway
how do you get to the wiring behind the helm? The only way I see is to remove the electrical panel thats below the wheel. Is this the only way?? It would explain why my panel is missing screws and looks like it was dragged around the floor. I have a few items I want to straighten out like the stereo, 12v plugs, etc, and I dont see anything on the other side in the head, so ,,,,,,,,,,,, what gives

there is a removable access panel at the gunnel to the STARBOARD side of the electrical breaker panel.

Probably 8 or so phillips head screws.

If it's faded, paint it a nice coat of glossy white while it's off.

Also the top of your Star Trek instrument "pod" is very removable.

There are two "handles" that look like wing unts at the rear of the pod.

They are between the windshield and the pod

Look through the windshield and you will see them

Then simply remove the phillips head screws on the edge of the black panel and the whole thing will lift up.

I used to use a coat hangar to hold the thing up to the top of the windshield.

I think Bob CT came up with something better but cannot remember what that was.

you can also get under the helm from the three gang switch for the engine room and cockpit lights.

RW.... the port side??I think you mean the starboard side, there I have a speaker installed, and there is limited access to the electrics there. I think for what I have to do, Id be better off to remove the electrical panel. There are to many sloppy wires hanging around, and this will be my opportunity to repair the border of my panel, as it is chipped and damaged by the PO.or owners

That's correct, the starboard side is an access panel, same as my boat..

You'll need to get in there to access the fuse block if adding anymore new wires for electronics or accessories....

I spent a LOT of time under the helm on my boat last year. Remove all the fasteners as RWS suggested. Then, you can take the whole thing and stand it on its back and use 1 or 2 wood clamps attached to the windshield frame to hold it. You don't really want to clamp it tightly, just keep it from falling down.

It needs to be almost vertical so you need to pull the whole thing forward as you're lifting up. It's heavier than you think, there's a ton of wiring underneath. In my opinion, they should have made some sort of connections at the helm so the whole thing could easily be removed and worked on.
