When you say Chevy 260 engine do you mean 260 hp? My 1971 F26 with a Chrysler 225 hp engine cruises at 18 knots (21 mph) at 3,000 rpm using a 15 x 11 prop (no cupping). The shaft angle on the 1971 is 15 degrees. I believe the shaft angle on the 1979 is steeper because it does not have a V drive. With the lower efficiency of the steeper shaft angle, I would guess 260 hp would be about the same or slightly faster. It's just a guess and YMMV.

It's a Mercruiser 260. But to answer your original question, it should, given all else is proper.

The Merc 260 is 260 hp. It will definitely get the boat on plane. My original estimates are probably close to what you'll actually see.

What engine is currently in the boat? If you are replacing a Chrysler engine with a Chevy engine, you will also need a new bell housing.

did he give you the bell housing too ? If not you'll need one. The Merc 260 is a Chevy 5.7 (350) and is a good engine...you can whip on it all day and it'll keep workin'

The 260 will be 260hp... or a 350cu in block.

Powerboat Guide suggests the 26 Express was 6,000 pounds (flybridge model will be a bit heavier), and with 230hp standard engine would cruise around 14-15 and top out around 25 knots.

With the bigger engine you will get another 10-20% I would think .

By way of comparison : my father's old 28' Trojan (1969 vintage) was wood.
Weight : 6,600 pounds
Beam : 10'10"
Engine : Single Chrysler 383 (putting out 260hp)

We cruised around 1800 RPM at 16-18 knots.
Only opened it up once or twice, never pushing it beyond 3500 RPM (25 knots)
